300 yards for the first time today!

I made my daughter go to the range today, that's right I made her. I've been struggling lately getting her to shoot. I don't want to force her, but deer season is coming up fast and she needs to shoot.

I asked her if she liked hunting, and she said yes but she didn't really like shooting anymore. So she reluctantly said okay to shooting when I told her that she didn't need to shoot a lot she just needed to shoot. I also threatened not to take her hunting in OK for Thanksgiving.

So since she's getting bored with punching paper I decided to switch things up. I had her hang up a paper target at 100 yards and have her take one shot. We walked down and saw that her zero hadn't changed. So we went back to the bench and I adjusted her scope up 3.5 MOA and told her to shoot the gong at 300.

I got a "WHAT" from her! I told her to just take her time and send three shots at it. Then I got a sheepish "okay" out of her.

1st shot and I yelled out "HIT!", she just grinned at me. 2nd shot she missed, I asked her what happened she simply stated "I jerked". I told her to take time with her next shot and do everything like her first 3rd shot "HIT!", 4th shot "HIT!".

We then packed up everything to head home. Then we walked down and took a look at her target. 3 out of 4 on target and she knew what she did wrong on her miss, that makes for one happy dad. The load is a 125 grain NBT at 3000 fps out of a .300 Savage, and I told her we should be able to "whack and stack OK whitetail" with her rifle.

Walking back to the bench I asked her if she'd rather shoot at 100 or 300? She said shooting at 300 was a lot more fun. So much fun that tonight when she prayed at supper she thanked God for shooting.

Wow, thats some pretty nice shootin dude, I know my kids get bored with 100, but they sure jeep goin to the range with me.
And thats all I can ask for....we're blessed dude.

Lovely daughter, Taylor, and good shooting!

I raised my son, now a father of three, with a rifle and pistol in his hands. He now has been handed down my 300WBY. Heck, he now shoots it much better than I do.

He lives in Custer, Mt and hunts often. I know that you're as proud of your daughter as I am of my son.

He has son with severe food allergies, no pork, beef, chicken, rice, wheat, dairy, the list goes on, but he can eat venison. My son keeps deer meat in his freezer and my grandson , 3yo, loves it. It really fills me with pride that my son is able to provide this safe food for my grandson! He paid attention and learned well and is an excellent provider!

Well, now this is just out-flippin-standing.

Better'n I could do.

Hannah's motto: "If you heard the shot, you were not the target". :)

Very nice shooting!

I can relate, as I took two granddaughters and a grandson out shooting in prep for hunting. They had fun shooting .22s and .243s, then two got deer on youth day.

Apparently the boy and girl had a bet on who would get one first. The grandson won the bet, but the girl shot a 140 lb doe at 175 yards, so had the heaviest and the longest shot. Both deer were shot within an hour of opening time, but about a quarter-mile apart.

The bragging and ragging were pretty heavy at brunch! :D

Awesome story! I was just out the other week with my niece. We were on a farm and a bunch of people were shooting. She's only nine, but she's tough and takes archery classes. You could tell she wanted to shoot, but was worried about the recoil. I pulled out my Crosman 2240 pellet gun and set up some clay pigeons down range. She started popping them. It was a lot of fun. Maybe in a few more years she'll be popping targets at 300 yards, too.

My daughter has come a long way since nine, I'm sure yours will progress nicely. My daughter is 11 now and two years ago there was no way I could get her to shoot a .300 Savage without loading it down to cast bullet levels. My daughter started shoring a .223 loaded down when she was 8, we called them her magic bullets.

Are you using OnTarget to measure the groups and info on the steel pic? I've been trying to figure out how to overlay the group data on the pic but can't figure it out.

Truman, my youngest, is going out tomorrow for his try at a youth season buck. He will be using his older brother's .270 winchester,Handi-rifle.
I hope both your daughter and him get the biggest deer in the state, would be cool. And they should be moving, the temp is forecasted to be in the 20's here in north Missouri.

He shot a 1" group last sunday at 100 yds so that's pretty much his limit as far as range goes.

Yes it's OnTarget. Once you get your target plotted if you save it as a graphic it leaves the data on the target in the file you save it to. Then you can save it to your hosting account to post it online.

I figured I was missing something stupid.. LOL. Thanks, I appreciate it.

Hat's off to ya Taylor!!!

I had bough a Weatherby Vangard in .243 for my daughter. She didn't like it at all!!!!
She traded it on a bow.. lol

Now shooting dad's 1911... That's a different story....

Wadda ya mean, we are out of ammo???!!!

Glad I reload!! Need to find more bulk bullets!!!

Just a note of congratulations for raising such a fine daughter. I took my niece to a trap shoot organized by my church about 2 years ago. She was 16 and had never fired any sort of firearm. She watched the first few groups to see how it worked and to make sure that there were other women out there then decided to give it a go. We set her up with a 20ga Beretta auto and she shot three rounds. A 12, then a 15, then and 18! Ha! She shoot better than me! She said it's like painting.

An expert shooter I know gave her a 15 minute lesson before she stepped up to the line. He knew what he was doing.
