Just got a new (used) 2001 Winchester Classic Featherweight Model 70 chambered in 300 WSM and have a few questions.

Whats the best ammo out there on the market right now for this load in terms of these three scenarios, all recommendations are greatly appreciated as this is a new cal for me to shoot.

1) Big Game

2) Range (paper target)

3) Home Defense

Thanks.

1) Big Game

2) Range (paper target)

3) Home Defense

1) any 180 to 200 gr bonded or partitioned bullet that your rifle shoots well.

2) long range? 190 SMK handloads are probably the best. If not, shoot the same as you chose for #1.

3) Seriously? All bullets are lethal, and in 300 WSM just grab whatever is cheapest, it'll kill the heck out of a human at any and all ranges that have any business being considered "defense" instead of "unjustified homicide." Unless your home is being attacked by a bear, in which case, go back to #1.

I handload for mine. But I've had decent luck with some factory loads by Federal I bought mainly to get the brass. I found some on a closeout for $19/box and bought 5 boxes. Walmart carries the same ammo I bought for $37/ box. That is where I'd start. Factroy ammo is usually $35-$50/ box. Not cheap. Save your brass, if you get serious about this reloading is the only real alternative. 223 is about the only factory ammo cheap enough buy. Even common rounds like 243, 308, 30-06 are now $25-$30 for a box of ammo.

For general deer/black bear there is no need to go over 150-165 gr ammo. Even for game up to elk the 165's are plenty if using a quality bullet. The lighter ammo shoots flatter and recoils less. You don't need anything heavier unless you plan on hunting coastal brown bear.

Well, Michigan white tails aren't particularly hard to kill despite being heavy on the hoof.

Try Winchester Power Point or Federal Fusion. Bullet weight doesn't really matter right now since this is your only firearm you are probably not going to be shooting thousand yard matches any time soon.

Expect to pay more than a dollar a shot for factory ammo. Expect recoil to be "brisk" from a featherweight rifle.

Good luck getting her sighted in.
