300 win mag

Soo I just recently bought a rem 700 300 win mag.. It came with a thumbhole stock and vortex scope and I got it for $800.. Right now I hunt with a 30.06 and I've killed elk out to 350 yards.. I got the 300 win mag so I could shout out to 500+ yards but I'm beginning to wonder if I shouldn't have just stayed with the 30.06

That's a nice rifle. I think you'll be happy with your 300 win mag. To me the kick isn't a whole lot harder than 30-06 and the extra range is worth it. It is perfect for larger game like elk or the big mule deer.

When I lived in eastern Idaho, the .300 Win Mag was awful common. Recoil is pretty subjective, or I should say people's response to recoil is, but if the '06 doesn't bother you, you'll get used to the magnum knock-em-dead. But...if you already bought it, why ask us?

With good bullets, and a man who can shoot, your 30-06 is a 500 yard elk killer. The 300 WM extends that range up to 550 or 600 yards. At ranges out to 400 yards no animal will ever notice the difference between the 2. Between 400 and 500 yards the 300 mag might offer some advantage, but not much.

I'm not opposed to using a magnum round if someone wants to. I own a very similar 300 WSM. Shooting game larger than deer at extended range is what they are made for. But for most people, including me, a 308, 3006, 270 or any of about a dozen other standard cartridges are more than enough.

The question is, are you good enough shot to take advantage of it? The added weight, increased recoil, more expensive ammo are also things to consider. Only you can decide if it is worth it to you. If recoil doesn't bother you and you can shoot it well the extra power never hurts.

No problem keep shooting/hunting with the 06 working out to 500 yards until you're comfortable with shooting the .300 WM. Then once you're comfortable with the WM keep shooting the 06 on a regular basis. Start with 150 grain bullets in your .300 and work your way up to heavier bullets, don't start out shooting heavy bullets first or you may learn to hate a magnum rifle.

Nice rifle though I'm not a fan of thumb hole stocks for the type of hunting I do. The thumb hole stock should help you absorb the recoil of the WM a little better. Which Vortex scope did you get? I really like the Viper line, I don't have any experience with the diamondback or crossfire lines.

The stock adds nothing to the value of the rifle, and depending on the scope I'd say you're in the ballpark of what you paid and the rifles actual worth. Not a great deal, but not a bad one either.

Yes I too like the viper line. But the scope on the rifle is a diamond back 4-12. What do you think the rifle is worth?

Heavier stocks always help with reducing felt recoil; trade-off being the obvious of carrying the extra weight (for some).

Do you know the make of that stock? I've never seen a Rem 700 come from the factory with a thumbhole, and that looks an awful lot like a Boyd's lightweight thumbhole.

If that's indeed the case, the last thing in the world I'd put in a stock as light as that is a .300 WM.

Unfortunately I do not know the make of the stock. But I know it's not factory, the guy I bought it from added the stock but I do not have the gun right now I bought I through a family member in Wyoming and I live in Montana

Since you already know how to hunt elk and no problems 350yds with 30-06 you should have no problems with 300mag @ 500yds. 300Mag I used before giving it to my nephew I used 180gr bullets. Our elk season here Co starts Oct and me I'd start shooting whatever bullet you decide to hunt with.

I don't hunt close to home so I always take back rifle and I want my scope reticle the same in all my elk rifles and I like the weight pretty close so my 30-338mag does weight any more than my 30-06 I use for elk. If your not walking lot than may not be a concern.

I'm heading up high country later today be gone few days elk might still be down low.

No experience with TH stock on hunting rifles. Well good luck

Lets put it this way..... I have carried and killed many big game animals with a M70 300 Win Mag. This is when 25 years ago the magnum craze was at full swing. Suddenly we needed a magnum to kill the same game we did with the 30-30?? I admit it was fashionable to own a magnum in those days.
Truth is, I have yet to set myself up in any situation to shoot 500 yards. My longest shot was a walking blackbear at 245 yards. I came to the reality that ANY non-magnum conventional deer caliber would have killed all my many big game animals I have killed over the years. Now my favorite calibers are the 270 Winchester and 308. Both totally capable of taking a deer at 500 yards if I ever had to (which I wont).

Stick with your 30-06. There is nothing the 300 Mag will do that your 30-06 wont do under 500 yards. Are there really any times that you cant close the distance from 500 yards to 300 or less when stalking a elk?? 500 yards is a very long shot, even on a elk. I am a bow hunter so I ask this as how good your hunting and stalking skills are and not your shooting skills.

Do you have any ideas as to what this gun is worth?

I see you have asked this question several times, are you wanting to sell it or trade it?

As a rule, we generally dont talk about prices or value too specific. It varies a bit around the country. My recommendation is check sites like gunbroker and see what a set up like that is getting.

Don't worry about the stock being light it isn't, it's just light for a laminated stock. It weighs about what a standard walnut rifle stock would weigh but is more stable. It really isn't a light stock in the grand scheme of things. The thumbhole design will help reduce felt recoil as well, because your arm will help act as a shock absorber as well.

As far as if you paid too much for it, one picture isn't enough to price it. Does the rifle have a hinged floor plate? What Vortex scope is on it? What rings and mounts are on it?

I'll guess that the original owner at about $800 in the rifle. He wanted his money back out of it and you wanted the rifle. So I say both came out okay.
