300 win mag. what grain?

180 Nosler Partition. If you want a little more speed the 165 partition, but I am leaning on the 180 Nosler partition. It is a great bullet in my book. But that is just me.

Which one is the most accurate in your rifle, Trust me the animal you shoot with it will not notice the difference. I would only go heavier if I am shooting longer ranges or going after something big like brown bear or bison. Beyond that you are good to go with everything you listed.

I had the same question. Looks like the 180 is winning hands down. I'm looking for deer only, and the 300 WSM is a little overkill, in my opinion. I bought it when my wife took over my 270 A bolt, and I thought that I could use it for Moose, Elk or what ever. I can see bigger game - bigger bullets, but for deer? What is the advantages of lighter and heavier? Lighter means faster, less drop. Heavier less wind affect and more penitration. Lighter bullet less recoil right? Do heavier bullets shoot more accurate? Then I wouldn't have to rework a load if I ever do get the $ for Elk or moose......... Seems like I'm talking myself into 180's. Any thing else? Any opinions welcome!!

What rate of twist is in your rifle? That will help determine what you should use. For a given caliber (in this case a .308 diameter), the way to get heavier bullets is to make them longer. As you increase the length to diameter ratio you need to spin it faster to stabilize the bullet. That is the reason that even though you can buy a 220gr bullet for a 30-06, hardly anybody uses them because most 30-06 barrels don't have a fast enough rate of twist to shoot them accurately.

The standard rate of twist for a .300WSM is 1 in 10". That is optimized for a 30 caliber 165grn pill. Chances are that unless you are a REALLY good shooter, you probably won't notice much of a difference between a 165 and a 180. I'd choose either of those over the 150's.

I shoot 165 gr boat tails in both the 30-06 and 300winmag. Does the job on deer sized critters, elk and (if I can ever get a tag) should work fine on black bears.
