My son has a Rem.700 chambered in 300 Win.Mag.,and does anyone have a favorite MFG.(cartridge) for white tails....? Need to use up to 300 yds...

I have shot the Federal Premium bonded Vital Shock, Federal Power Shock, Remington Premier, Remington Core Lokt, Winchester Supreme and Supreme Elite in the XP3 and the E-Tip, Winchester Supreme in the Ballistic Silver Tip and the Accubond, Winchester Super X Power Point, Black Hills Gold Triple Shock, Hornady SST, GMX and Inter Bond in My BAR .300 Win Mag. The best by far for me and what I currently use is the 180 Gr. Hornady SST followed closely by the 150 Gr. Hornady GMX. The Federal Bonded Vital Shock and both the Wichester Supreme and Supreme Elite were all three very close to each other in the 180 Gr. catagory followed by The Hornady Inter Bond , Core Lokt and the rest metioned above. Also shot some soft points and boat tail soft points, but really not worth mentioning. The Hornady rounds produced tighter groups and the expansion of the SST and the GMX was just unbelievable. The Hornady Inter Bond shot tighter groups than the other brands but didn't have the expansion of the SST, GMX and the Winchester Supreme and Supreme Elite or the Federal Bonded Vital Shock. It did however expand a little better than the Core Lokt. These are just my results from my rifle ( BAR Safari II) being shot by me. Different shooters with different rifles may have different results. I have shot at least one box of each of the affore mentioned in my rifle and the results were pretty consistent. The Hornady rounds as well as a lot of the others are good rounds up to and beyond the 300 yard mark. You will just have to shoot and find which round you and your rifle like most, but the SST is a good starting point. ;)

The Sierra 165 BTSP and a Nosler 150 Boat tail Ballistic Tip. I haven't shot them at 300 but they are very good at 100 yards.

This will be the first year I haven't hunted with my .300 Win Mag in almost 20 years. I've had the best luck with good old Remington CoreLoks, 150 gr. Nothing more needed and they grouped great in my Ruger 77 Mk II all-weather. I've shot them from 100 yards out to 250 yards with the coreloks and they all dropped on the spot.

I like the Winchester xp3 180gr for off the shelf ammo. I groups the best in my rifle and I am sure it is as good as any other for lethality.

Man you guys must have some HUGE Whitetails where you live.

I would think anything out of a 300 WM would work. Too light and they will blow up and not leave much deer to eat. The two heavy would also take too much of your future dinner.

I would think 150s would probly be a happy medium.

(this post make me wonder about hunting with my little 257 Roberts Pee Shooter)

I'll explain using a .300 Win Mag on Wisconsin deer for you from my experience. :D

Years ago, a guy got me deer hunting at 18 years old and using a borrowed Winchester 94 30-30. I was sitting on a hill by a little brook with tamerack on the other side. I heard something coming through the tamerack sounding like another hunter with foot steps but out pops the biggest, hugest, most fantastic, giant, black swamp buck you could ever imagine at 40 yards. It sees me and turns broadside and I emptied that rifle into that deer. It never even flinched or got excited. Just trotted off up the hill. I waited a few minutes and went over and there was a nice blood trail. I followed that almost 100 yards to where the deer lay and the guy who took me hunting was gutting it out and had his tag on it! I argued but he insisted it had been there a long time. I also needed a ride home. He knew it was mine the bastard. Then I went through a few other calibers where the deer ran some. One disappointing one (surpisingly) was a .308. I shot a doe at 75 yards broadside right through the lungs/heart. And again. And again. Then stuck in a 180 gr. "roundnose" and she finally went down. I hate slow kills where the deer looks at you with those sad eyes and groans before dieing. I want quick, fast, instant kills where the animal doesn't know what hit it. That's why I'll never bow hunt. Nothing against those who do but just the way I am.

I settled on a .300 Win Mag. Not one deer has moved five feet from where I shot it. No one has tagged my deer since. No damaged meat but just a mess to field dress. I'll put up with that.

Now this year I've bought a .270 Win and will back down a bit since my brother has had excellent results with his. That is why I won't be undergunned. Too many hunters in too small an area that could tag your deer.

I guess you just have to shoot em in the right spot. I don't tear meat up when I shoot em. At least not any meat that I would eat. A shot placed right behind the front shoulder has always dropped em where they stood and at the most damaged a little bit of the front shoulder on the opposite side. I just grind the shoulders for sausage ,so no big deal. Have even shot a couple that went in the shoulder and still really not that much damage. And as far as the grain of the bullet goes, if anything ,the 150 gr. seems to inflict a little more damage than the 180gr. I also have the 270 and 30-06 in the BAR Safari II, but they hardly ever get shot. They are just eye candy in the safe. I have a 5 year old boy and a 7 month old boy. I imagine they will end up with the other 2 when they are old enough, but the .300 stays with me! I just like the .300 WM better.

sierra 180gr.works good for me never have to track & they work way out there.Hornady SST's 180gr. work way out there also no tracking needed but will make a mess with a bad hit.The 180's seem big for deer but My 700 loves them, confidence in you bullets count.:D

Just watch that you are not using too heavily constructed of a bullet on deer. Some 300 mag ammo is meant for big heavy animals like moose and may just sail right through a whitetail without expanding. I speak from experience as i once drilled a 140lb doe only to watch it run off. Now it only made it about 75yds and entrance and exit wounds were the same size. It looked like i shot it with a fmj.

Warbird, I'd have walked home on principle. Or took off to the truck while he gutted my deer & made him walk home.

& I agree w/ Kraig that a 300 mag ought to be enough gun.

Have shot a lot of whitetails with mine through the years and never had a bullet "sail" right through one without expanding. At the velocities these bullets travel I would think that when it comes in contact with anything that even remotely has any density, expansion will occur. I would have to see that scenario first hand!
