300 win mag or ultra mag

For a sniper rifle, is 300 ultra mag going to take the 300 winmag or is 300um just a bit too much? What is the range on both of these calibers. thanks!

A couple or three months back, Guns & Ammo had an article comparing these with the then-new Short Maggie.

Folks seem to be doing well with the .308 at 1,000 yards, so any of these magnums should provide a bit higher velocity with heavier bullets, giving a bit better accuracy.

Ammo choices and availability, and the availability of performance/doping data, have to count for something, and the 300 WM has those.

I agree with Treeprof. The 300 Win Mag is readily available and has a great history. That does count for alot. The Ultra Mag is supposed to be on par with the 300 Weatherby Magnum. Unfortunately, you're not gonna find it at Mom and Pop's country store if you forget your ammo at home. Same thing with the new Winchester Short Magnums.

I have to agree with the others, the 300WM is a great choice. It will do everything a 300UM will do. It is also a very accurate round. My 300WM Win Model 70 super grade consistently keeps groups under MOA in many different bullet weights and styles. I was skeptically a few years ago about the 300WM until I shot it and fell in love with it right away. Get the 300WM!

The 300 winmag is close to the performance of the 300 rum, but if you're a handloader the larger case of the ultramag is a pretty serious benefit, allowing you to load longer, heavier bullets with better b.c. and more at-range energy without compressing the powder in the case. On the other hand, it eats powder (and barrels) and the recoil is substantially nastier (mine has a Vais brake on it, which negates a ton of the recoil but makes it LOUD).
At the reccomendation of a fellow shooter, I tried the Sierra Matchking 220 grain bullets approaching 3100 fps and WOW what a shooter! At 1000yds it's still generating almost 1400 ft.lbs.
The biggest factor against the 300 rum is the availability of the 300 winmag. If you "roll your own" I'd say the ultra is the way to go. If not, the winmag is the obvious choice.

300 Win Mag. The next step up I would go would be the .338 Lapua. (.223, .308, 300 WM, and .338 Lapua are all in use as LE or military sniper rounds with the attendant dope sheets and experience that the more hunting-oriented loads may not have.)

Osama, Ya Momma.

I was going to ask about barrel life for the .300 RUM. Seems to me that a couple of hundred rounds would be the point at which you might start thinking about a new one.

Anyone have any experience or ideas on that subject?

I have both and the 300WM is definately a more versatile round. If you are buying factory ammo for the RUM, your choices are 200gr Nosler Partitions or 180gr Scirrocos. I know there are a few other choices but these are the rounds all the stores are carrying. I know this will change in time. I was pleasantly surprised to find 300RUM ammo at the local Wal-Mart.
Using factory ammo, neither the 300WM nor the 300 weatherby will equal the 180gr RUM Scirroco performance. Just what I have seen on the range; I have only shot the Weatherby and RUM side by side once, though. IMO, If you are looking to shoot light skinned game, the 300WM is the most versatile and least expensive to maintain of the three.

Hmm, sounds like the winner is 300WM. I am going to start to load my own soon. Friends and I are chipping in for the loader and I guess I get to keep it at my house. I can't wait. Thanks everyone for the advice.
