300 H&H???

Does anyone else shoot this cartridge? If you do, could you give a few details about your rifle and choice of loads (bullets, powder) for hunting, target, etc.?

I have a Ruger #1S (26" barrel) in 300 H&H, and really enjoy reloading for it. (It has a 2X7 Leupold, mounted low). It's had the usual "#1" tricks done to it - channelling & bedding of the stock, good trigger work and one of those Hicks accurizers with the adjustable tension screw. I've got it decently dailed in (2 inches at 200yds) for the factory Federal 180g Nosler Partitions. I don't have a whole lot of spare time, so rifles are all I reload for.

Lately I've been playing with the 180g Nosler BTGT bullets working up to 65grains of IMR 4831 w/ Federal 215 primers. Some loads were impressively tight, but still I'm experimenting.

With the 300 Weatherbys, Winchesters, and the newer 300 MegaBehemoths on the market, I was just wondering if anyone else liked this venerable old timer as much as this *relatively youthful* shooter does. :D Thanks.

I think the .300 Holland is first rate. My best handloads use H450 powder and 180 Nosler Partitions. For hunting the Federal 180 Nosler Premium stuff works quite well. Mine is a 1955 vintage Winchester Model 70, well-worn but still capable of minute of angle. Let's start a .300 H&H cult. Best, Rob

Thanks for the post. I haven't tried H450 yet, but I'll get some.

What I love about the 300 Holland is it's versatility - from slow-pokin' "deer loads" to maneater repellent. OTOH, a guy who once hunted Alaska told me that the "slowest" (as in "weakest," he meant) 300 mag he'd ever use up there was the 300 Weatherby. I didn't argue it with him, because I've never hunted Alaska, but I don't agree. Why wouldn't the 300 H&H be able to hold it's own with the right loads?

Also, I don't know if "cult" is the right word, but the .375 H&H Magnum has it's own webpage, including reloading data and a lot of pictures of some beautiful rifles in that caliber. I don't have the http handy right now, but the site is well-done and has a lot of great information. Regards.

300 H&H

Agtman, I live and hunt in southeast Alaska so I know where your friend is coming from. There are two main reasons for not recommending .30 caliber rifles. (1) The terrain is very rough and thick. Visibility can be very poor so we want to anchor the animal. (2) Brown bears!. My main bush rifle is a custom .458. I admit it is a little larger than normal. I also have .375 H&H and .338WM. These are very common. The 300 H&H will surely kill a brownie dead as a hammer. However, if you first sight him coming at you 20yds away it may not stop him before he takes a bite out of you. Having said all this I would still love to have a 300H&H in N0.1 Ruger. I think it's a great old round.
