.300 Blackout or 7.62x40 WT-Anyone else interested in these calibers?

I don't have a suppressor, and I don't reload ...yet. I've never even heard of the 7.62x40 before. Since I don't reload, their extreme scarcity and high prices are particularly problematic. They are interesting cartridges, but they are not for me.

I know a very experienced gent in Canada who is very excited about the 300 Blackout. Other than that I know very little, and yes, reloading would be a must due to limited supplies.

i want one with a suppressor to shoot pigs at night. other than that, no,i don't know anything. so i would suggest you get them both and let us know how they are please :D

300 Blackout or 7.62x40 WT...

Hello, again-

Thanks for the replies. Remington and CMMG are already making factory ammo in .300, and Wilson is in 7.62x40. A well-versed smithy I talked to earlier today who has been dealing in 6.8 SPC for several years said that he thinks the .300 will eventually supplant it, because it doesn't require proprietary magazines, or a new bolt. As far as comparison to the AR-10, remember this is the exact same thing as a standard size/weight AR, just with a new barrel. The 10 is considerably larger, heavier and bulkier-and recoil is much greater. The closest thing to compare as far as 'old-school' caliber would be 7.62 Russian, ala AK.

.300 Blackout or 7.62x40 WT?

Hey, Bus-

Yeah, I liked that round (the MPC) when it came out, too. I think the answer can be found in lack of gun industry/big corporate (or at least by a dedicated small shop) support for it.

I've thought about a .300BLK, but it seems that it's playing to an extreme niche- those who want 7.62x39 ballistics in an AR packaging that works well, and those who want a decent subsonic round for suppression purposes.

While the latter appeals to me, I just don't know if I want to go through the NFA hoops again (this time for a .30 cal can) just for a round that's rather expensive to shoot (so it ends up being something shot only rarely). Nifty idea? Sure. Is it for me? I don't know.

I had been thinking about a .450BM or .458SOCOM build, and did consider the .300BLK as an alternative, and I admit I still haven't made a decision. The other rounds are way more powerful, but they just are never going to shoot as quietly.

Wake up old thread...

Resurrection notice

I personally chose the WT over the 300 because the WT is designed to operate supersonic in the 125-150gn range.... 5.56lc brass with 147gn M80's..... you cant get much cheaper than surplus. Not to mention the fact that you have pulled 5.56 and decent 7.62 brass as leftovers.... only two of the most sought after reloading components. With that said, I do a lot of steel shooting and 147s hit like a sledge hammer compared to 5.56. I have dialed in a few loads for hog/whitetail with impressive results(impressive to me anyway). Good luck, Dmurph

I work with the 762X40WT and find the round to be a real killer drops deer in there tracks 125 to 150 gr rounds tight groups and can go susonic with rounds to 220 gr no recoil and light weight 20" barrel whats not to like
