.30 Luger for mom (was Colt Hammerless as a house gun)

One of my friends suggested .30 Luger and I am wondering if racking is going to be too hard. I recall having trouble racking a 9x19 version a while back though but that could have been lack of familiarity. We will fire friend's gun first, of course.

Has anyone experience witht hat gun, suggestions on buying, suitability, etc?

Drat, drat, drat, drat.

Ten years I had a Series 70 Combat Commander in 9mm Luger that would only feed hardball. When a hollowpoint hit the almost vertical barrel throat on it, the hollowpoint edge at 6 o clock would lock the shell in place. This was the second one I tried to make work over the years. I had about 10 Colt mags and 8 Pachmayer mags in 9mm, so I hated to rebarrel to 38 super. All those years, and all along I wanted a 30 Luger, and I never put it together! I could have just dropped a new barrel in and used the old mags and only maybe ( probably ) putting in a lighter recoil spring. I finally sold it last month with a 17L Glock. *Now* I think of it.

But not to worry. I have a brand new two tone HP Practical new, unfired and untouched in the box since the 94 ban until I pulled it out yesterday, and umpteen factory hicap mags. And now they have all those 32 acp hollowpoints the right diameter for the 30 Luger.

Anyway, you ought to be able to find a nine that can have it's barrel replaced that doesn't have much strength needed to work the slide, less if the 30 needs a lighter spring.

Are you saying that I could have a Glock or a ny other modern pistol re-barreled to .30 Luger and use existing magazines? Add a lighter recoil spring and go at it?

I know that 9x19 was basically 30 Luger necked up but I wonder if this could truly work. Anyone?

That *would* solve quite a few problems at once. Wonder what modern pistol other than a Glock would have a hidden hammer and single action trigger...

The actual Lugar pistol?

If she has problems racking a slide, she's going to have even more problems grabbing the little cocking protrusions on the toggle, especially if she has arthritis in the hands.

A few years ago Ruger made a swap-barrel P95 set in 9x19 and .30 Luger. You may try finding one of those.

i dont know a great deal about the caliber but I do know were there is a 30cal. hi-power.....if your interested in that..fubsy.

No matter what platform you use to launch it, the .30 Luger is far from the ideal defense cartridge. Even with 'magic hollowpoints' you are throwing a very light missle. FMJ's are overpenetrative, fragile slugs are TOO fragile and strike a feeble blow at best. The Luger pistol itself is one of the most unsuitable home defense guns, especially for an older woman with limited manual strength.
The best handgun for your mother is a good-quality small-frame revolver in .38 special caliber.

gotta agree with the dissenters here oleg.. I'm all for keeping old guns around and functional.. but now you are talking about arming someone unfamiliar with guns with a gun only an expert would touch. Really Really really re-think this. get her a big loveable dog that barks a lot if she can't figure out a revolver.

A 30 mauser is the same as a 7.6x25 tokarev.. I've never heard this cartridge described as "underpowered". It very high velocity should be an overpenetrater if anything.

Maybe you are trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.. rather than leave a cocked and locked gun around with the safety off.. TRY to teach her to use a revolver. All she has to do is pick it up and pull the trigger.. no safty no re-loads.. no springs constantly compressed. get a used smith and wesson model 10.. full sized service revolver. She's not carrying it, so size isn't an issue.

I got her a .22 SW17 4" and she can't hit anything at 15ft with it. She shoots way over the target. She hits bullseye with autoloaders just fine. Guess I will keep training her with the Buckmark.
