30-378 Weatherby

Assuming that you take care of the barrel and allow adequate cool off time in between shots, what could be a reasonable life expectancy for the barrel? I have read accounts of rather noticeable erosion after just 80 rounds. I realize there is a price to be paid for feeding an animal like that. It sure uses a hellacious amount of powder, ballistics are very impressive though.

A bud's got one - does a chrono'd 3550fps with 180 Nosler BTs - he loves it. & yup, it takes a bit of powder.

Weatherby cartridges: burn-up much powder, make big noise, kill big game, kick shoulders and asses.

Just look at the pressure figures and the shape of the case, how could not get throat errosion?

mobias, I was emailing back and forth with Whby about building a 7MM/378 and was told that "I was a true fan of the 7MM" but the throat and barrel would not last past 200 rds or so. I would like to think that the 30 cal version would last a bit longer. 10 rds or so to get it sighted in 40 plus or minus to work up a load 5 rds a year for confirmation of sights and a limit of ?[ per year will take a while to add up to 200 rds. If you like it go for it. :D:D:D

I have been playing with getting one of these for awhile in an Accumark but have been intimidated by the possible wear. Lazzaroni cartridges are very similar in ballistics and they have their warnings about barrel cool down too so I would guess that would apply also to the 30-378.

Well shucks,

How bout a real wildcat... the 30/50 BMG. Should be good for around 4,500 fps with a 180 grainer. Course the Stellite barrel may be hard to come by. Whatdaya guys think?

That round was tried but with a 338 bullet and I think it was called "something Talbot". The info I got said it was good before throat erosion showed at 200 rds.....

I love people who are crazy enough to try stuff like that.

Seems like "the bud" was using 70+ (hell, it may have been 120 grs for all I remember - seemed like a bunch) grs of 4350 (sumpin like that) ... what did Gale Mac say about barrel life being inversely proportional to the amount of powder you pour down it ... ?

Although I have no personal desire for many classes of rifles & cartridges, it is very cool that there's those out there that do have their more "exotic" toys. More power to 'em!
