Jeffly, I know an old man here in Idaho who has killed many elk with his old Win. "thutty thutty." But he's lived up in the mountains all his life, knows the habitat like the back of his hand, and told me he hasn't taken a shot over 100 yards.
That said, if you want some more power and love levers, look at the Browning Lever Action rifle, in .308 Win. It's a dandy, and will take any elk around, if you do your part. As it has a box magazine, you can use any pointed bullet around. Adding a scope is a snap. A lot of elk hunters here use .308 Win., and they put elk in the freezer every fall.
