Howdy Tom,
If you search the archives, you'll find a few days worth of reading about the breaking-in of the Bbl of your rifle. One of the points made was that if you had a match quality Bbl on your rifle, you wouldn't need to worry about that sort of activity, as it had probably already been done.
On a more 'massed produced' weapon, breaking in seems to have some merit - in certain cases.
There will always be someone that will want to argue the point, but I'm willing to go out on a limb and say that a strict 'Breaking-In' procedure with your piece probably wouldn't make a difference with overall accuracy and barrel life. What ever type of Lever action you have, they aren't known for their tack driving accuracy out of the box.
I think that if you were to shoot a box of rounds through, as in sighting-in, and then were to take her home and clean her real good, you shouldn't have any problems as all. After all, most breaking in involves shooting a round or few, cleaning the b'jesus out of the bore, then shooting another shot (or a few) and then cleaning, over and over until a certain amount of ammo has gone down the bore.
Wasn't it Gale McMillan who said that more rifle barrels were ruined by over-zealous clean than by any amount of rounds sent down them? There is no denying that Gale knew what he was talking about when he spoke of Arms, so from just his advice alone, I take my directions.
It's a pity that he isn't around any more so as to add some more insight to this string, but from what I've learned from him, and others, I don't think that you should worry too much about breaking in your barrel.
Hold them hard!
