30/30 Ammo

I need advice on a good 30/30 load that is good enough to take deer & hogs. I live in the Central Florida area.

Ain't no bad US made ammo for the 30-30.I like the Remington 150 gr for deer here in Md.For deer and hogs, you might want the 170 gr stuff for those hogs.

Buy a box each of different brands, and bench your 30-30. Go with what groups the best.

My family and I have taken several deers and many hogs with 30-30 in Central Florida. We always use Remington 170gr (Lok-Core or something like that) simply because they are always availble from local Walmart and K-Mart at cheap price. They worked very well. However, for past several years we stopped using 30-30 and changed to .44mag and even .357mag for deers as most deers around these parts are pretty small and we usually hunt smaller "meat" hogs. If you are after trophy size hog use something stronger than 30-30 like 308 or 30-06.

The most effective factory ammo on the market IMHO is the Winchester factory 150gr hollow points. If you want to load your own I reccommend the Nosler 170's. Both provide reliable expansion at 30-30 velocities and still offer adequate penetration.

Too many bullet makers today use the same thickness jacket for 30-30 bullets as they do for higher perfomance 30's, and the result is sometimes the darn thing seems to do more damage to the tree behind the deer than to the deer itself.
