30-30 150 grain for hogs?

Im going hunting this weekend and im wantin to know if my 30-30 will be enough gun for hogs. I have 5 boxes of standard 150 grain but ive read articles elsewhere that 150 grain isnt strong enough. i know where the vitals are but will the 150 grain penetrate the shoulder shield or should i buy 170 grain?
 
Most popular rifle around these parts for hogs is the 30-30. I don't think you will have to worry about it not being enough. Take good vital shots and your hog won't go far.

Hopefully you get a large group of pigs and you get to watch the mayhem that ensues after you shoot one, my favorite part.

The 30-30 should be more than adequate.
 
Thanks for the input. Hopefully this will be the trip i also get my 1st deer. Ive studied the vital areas of both animals so with luck maybe i will get him. And also, isnt there something special or traditional your supposed to do when you shoot your first deer or is that just a wives tale?

Agreed. Within reason, it is always better to go with bigger bore, heavier bullets, higher velocities, and put more KE on target, wherever you hit, whatever you are shooting at.

That said, the 30-30 150 grain factory load will kill a hog with a hit in the vitals, and going after the neck/shoulder may be better than trying to blow through heavier parts. Good luck.

Down here when you kill your first deer blood from it gets smeared all over your face. It’s a rite of passage and has been for years. Not doing it is bad gris-gris for you.
 
Bottom of the chest, right behind the front leg, or any where in the neck. I prefer near the ear, depending on range.

What he said. I've killed quite a few off our land and anything well suited for deer is fine for hogs. Whenever I run across one while carrying a small caliber rifle like a 22 or 22 magnum I will shoot them in the head. But with any of my larger rifles a shot behind the shoulder has been consistently lethal with everything from a 243 up to a 50 caliber muzzleloader.

I shot a big one right behind the shoulder, slightly under mid body with 150gr 30-30.
It was only about 65-70yds and went thru both lungs and came out again. She went 10' and was done.
 
A 150gr will definitely do the job.
