Had my Savage 110 30-06 trigger checked today to find out its breaking point.First time was 3 1/2 pounds and second attempt was 3 3/4...is this acceptable??Guy who tested it said no way will a Savage have a 3 1/2 pull new out of the box.Since i bought this used can i assume its owner had it lowered?? Thanks for any replies...

That pull weight should be acceptable for a rifle intended for hunting. The Savage trigger design really does not allow a very light pull, and it is possible that that trigger was worked on. Still, I have seen a few that were pretty close to that. Try the gun for a while before doing anything to it.

SAFETY CHECK IT!

If it is the factory trigger and the pull weight has been reduced, you'd better safety check it! The factory trigger can be safely adjusted, but like Jim sez it's not intended to be adjusted too low.

I'd recommend the following check at a minimum:
-Unload and clear the rifle.
-Work the bolt vigorously (!).
-Confirm it hasn't fired by squeezing the trigger.
-Do this several times.
-Work the bolt again.
-Bang it on the butt plate hard.
-Confirm it hasn't fired by squeezing the trigger.
-Do this several times.

Also check the function of the safety, including whether or not it'll be "safe" via the above slam around test, after the safety has been switched on and off a few times. A lot of folks end up rendering the safety into something else when they do their own Savage trigger jobs.
