30-06 or 270

I'm more of a fan of a 30-06. Larger bullet selection (including heavier bullets if you want to use them). About the same felt recoil. .270 can have more muzzle blast if you are using a barrel less than about 24".

In terms of dead animals - either will do the job for you quite well.

Another view about six of one and a half-dozen of the other. For deer and elk and hogs, anyhow. And I never heard any complaints from coyotes or jackrabbits, for that matter.

If you get into handloading, there are more options available for the '06.

The 30-06, 308 and 223 are great because the big three(federal, winchester and remington) all make inexpensive white box practice ammo.

If the white box bullet weight is the same as your hunting ammo, practice with the white box, then verify POI with your hunting ammo and your GTG.

The 270 is an excellent round but it won't do anything the 30-06 can't and there is no cheap practice ammo for it.

FALshootist pretty much hit the nail on the head.

.30-06=cheaper ammo availability
.270=less recoil, but not a huge difference (at least on the one I shot compared to my .30-06)

Both excellent calibers.

Both are excellent cartridges. I prefer the 06 just because I like it.

More important is the fit of the rifle. Stocks vary from rifle to rifle. Even synthetic stocks vary depending on the mold. This also applies to the butt pad.

I have a two inch drop in my right shoulder. Most standard stocks are to straight for me. Check several different rifles before you settle on one.

the stock issue is why I have a Winchester Mod 70 in 338 Win Mag. I'm not excited about the caliber but I love the rifle.

What will the .270 do that the .30-06 won't? Shoot a bit faster, flatter, and farther with a bit less recoil.

That said, I have two .30-06 rifles and no .270 rifles. More plentiful ammo, more versatile loads available... Of course, one of the two is a Garand, so in that case .270 was not an option.

get one of each.

Or two that is what I did!

I prefer the .270 Win but it was my first love so to speak. I've killed more game with the .270 but the 06 is a close second. Used bot on game up to the size of elk and can't really tell you the difference between the effectiveness of the two.

.270/30-06

The .270 will shoot a little flatter, less energy but shoots flat similar to 7mm Rem. Mag, .270 does have less recoil than 06. If I were buying a gun for deer and smaller the .270 would be on the short list.
30-06 is better suited for larger game, it really shines with 180 grain bullets.

Not really a big difference though. Both are classic rounds for good reason. In case you didn't know, the .270 is a necked down 30-06 case.

I had a 7mm Rem mag and sold it to buy my 30-06 and have never looked back. I love my 30-06.

First off, I don't have a .30-06 but have owned a .270win for 25+ years and love it...;)

If you load, .270win has lighter bullets available while .30-06 has heavier bullets available. You can buy low cost .30-06 plinking ammo or military surplus, not so much with .270win.

That's about it. Flip a coin, or see which one has the prettier stock....:)

Bud's has them for $450.00, can't beat the price. Deer and hogs would be the te main focus for this rifle, target shooting a little too. I am leaning towards the 270, but still undecided. I might go up to Gander Mountain tomorrow to play with some. I do like the differant sizes for the 06. On the good side I do have my scope picked out.

When I bought my hunting rifle I had in mind what features I wanted on it and I told myself I'd buy whichever I found in .270 or 30-06 first. I just couldn't decide on one over the other. I ended up with a 30-06, and I can say I love it. There is a huge range of bullet weights you can go with and imo it's just about perfect for everything. Honestly, if I had to do it over again I'd go with the 30-06 again, but that doesn't mean a .270 is a bad choice.

The big whatever, do your job the bullet will do it's. I've got an 06 or two but could just as easily have a .270 or three. the bigger question might be "whatever"

The old bs about the 270 being faster and flatter shooting is just that. THe 270 will shoot a 150 bullet at a maximum of2850 according to imr powder company. The 30-06 will shoot a 150 at a maximum of 3068. With both zeroed at 100 yards the 270 drops51.3 inches at 500 yards but the 30-06 only drops47.4 at the same yardage. These are both sierra boat tail bullets. This info is avaliable from imr-sierra and hornady ballistic charts. Ya i have both and like them both but the 30-06 is a more universal round. ED
