30/06 load recommendation

Picked up a Mossberg 30/06 bolt action with 22" barrel, 1:10 twist rate a while back. Loaded some Nossler 168 grain ballistic tips with 46 grains of IMR 4895. Very accurate load. Just ordered some Nossler 180 grain ballistic tips and am looking for recommendations for powder and load. Trying to avoid burning through bunches of powder and bullets developing an accurate load. Thanks for any help.

With bullets weights from 150-180 gr it is hard to go wrong with either H4350 or IMR4350. I use Hodgdon online data and have a slight preference for H4350.

http://www.hodgdon.com/

I load 58.5 gr with 165's @ ~ 2900 fps

60 gr with 150's @ ~ 3000 fps

and 57 gr with 180's @~ 2800 fps

I get sub MOA in my rifles. those are near max loads, they are fine in my rifles, but start low and work up for yours.

With mid weight bullets from 150 to 168, try for some 4064 if 4895 not available. They are very similar. I load identical charges of each for '06s with the Garand. For heavier 180 to 190s or 200s, 4350 would probably be a better bet for increased velocity if desired (but the latter heavier bullet loads not recommend for the Garand unless loaded down with the slow burning powder). I added the latter just so not to be corrected by other responders, but that does not apply to your loading.

I use 44.5 grns of IMR 4064 with 180 grn nosler blistic tip and with my rifle a Weatherby Vangard and 10,000 off the lanz and I cover a spot the size of a quarter with 5 shots @ 100yrds

Schill32, glad to see your post about your load and set up for the vanguard , I have one too.

Do you hunt and what primers are you using ?
Thanks !

jmr40 nailed it, start at the lower listed amount and work up.

My nephew has I believe the exact rifle and no matter which bullet we have tried from 150 - 180grs, they ahve all shot well with H-4350.

Can you get more velocity from other powder, possibly, but when you can stack them into 3/4 - 1" groups at 100yds why would you care to?

RickAZ, i think you meant 165 grain Ballistic Tips from Nosler. With that said, the manual reads IMR 4350 as most accurate powder tested. 53-57 grains, my 1-10" twist loves 56.5 grains of IMR 4350@ 2750 fps. Thats from Nosler #6, btw.

The 180 grain Ballistic Tip in this manual, says AA3100 as most accurate powder 54.5-58.5,.

AA 3100 is between IMR 4831 and VhitN160.

I do hunt deer and the primmers I use is federal match the 210M
The reason i hunt with 180grn Nosler BT is because there is a lot twigs and stuff that can get in the way and they do a great job going through all that.

Thanks , I can't find any match primers in my neck of the woods .
I do have wlr, cci rl and mag. Fed 210 .
I haven't tested any of them yet.

I've been using factory ammo for hunting so far.
I want to get some hand loads worked up for the new deer season.

Good to know your having succes with your vanguard and with nosler .
I'm gonna start out using nosler data myself.

For 180gr bullets I haven't used H4350, but really like IMR4350 and RE17 I started using when I couldn't find IMR4350.

I use Reloader 22 for an '06 and 180 grain bullets. Velocity and accuracy is exceptional. Both partitions and BT's were excellent in front of 62 grains of Reloader 22, out of Winchester cases, and blasted off with Rem number 9 primers.

It is a max load and while 61 shot well, 62 was better. It kicks a bit, so the pressure is getting higher in my gun with this load. However, no signs of flattening of primers or sticky extraction of fired cases. But, approach with caution.

I have toyed with trying IMR 4350 but, with the results R22 give, I just can't justify trying anything else for the 180 grain bullets. Don't dismiss it. God Bless

Hey TimSr and WVM, glad to see you guys are having great results.
I'm gonna start off with some 165 gr pills , haven't decided on what primer yet.

Been away for a couple days. Primers are CCI lg rifle. This is going to be for hunting when I decide to go after larger game and might need more than 250 yds due to the area I am in. Primarily hunt with my inline muzzleloader, but 250 is as far as I am comfortable. Elk, black bear, that sort of game.

That's the beauty of a heavier .308 bullet from the '06. The same load that works well at 50 will be working well at 250 or 450. To this day, it is the best one cartridge for all needs going. Good luck and God Bless

Went to my local gun store to pick up H 4350 or IMR 4350. Of course they had niether. A friend who works there, retired military and former competative shooter, recommended 46g of IMR 4064. Said it was very accurate. Picked up a bottle and loaded 5 rounds. Went to the range and put the first four rounds in the bull at 100 yds under 1 inch. Pulled the 5th but I think I found a load I can live with. Thanks for all the input.
