im looking for a 30-06 around $700 bucks. im really loving the Browning A-Bolt but im looking to keep my options open when it comes down to the time to buy

Buy used! Plenty of good old 06's with plenty of mileage left in them. Some might need a little polish to shine but I doubt it will be worn out. I just bought a M70 fwt Classic in 30-06 for $450 it will make a great carrying hunting rifle.

Browning A-Bolt

Browning A-Bolt with Leupold

Browning A-Bolt w/BOSS Stainless with Leupold

Browning A-bolt $459.95

There will be some extra fees to add to your costs by the time you pay shipping and transfer fees. If you don't get in a hurry you'll find the right deal. Remember the closer you get to hunting season the higher the prices will get.

Yeah, buy used. Lots of good value in used rifles these days. NOwadays, unless I'm looking for something really, really special I hit the used gun racks before I even consider buying new.

I'm with Taylorce1. Look for one of the used Winchester Classics. I paid $400 each for 2 of my Stainless Classics, one came with a very useable scope worth $200. A comparble new stainless Winchester is $1,000+. I recently ran across a stainless Classic Featherweight for $700. That price seems high for a "used" rifle, but this one was still NIB. Hang tags still on the triggerguard. Winchester only made a few of those in 1999 and 2000 so I gladly paid the price.

If you want to buy new a Winchester Featherweight in wood blue will be around $800 and worth going a little over budget on. If $700 is a firm limit I'd be buying a Ruger Hawkeye at $600-$650.

i think im going to be looking at the new T/C dimension, anyone know when that is set to be released??

Do yourself a favor and buy a rifle with a proven track record. I wouldn't touch the dimension, when there are better options to build a switch barrel rifle. The Savage are far better to use if you want to switch barrels than the new T/C. Plus if you want a more options you can set up a M700 Remington with a barrel nut just like a Savage.

I think those A bolts are made in Japan. The Japs started world war two and killed my mother's only brother.

I would not be proud of a jap gun.

Buy an American made gun. Ruger and Savage are well priced and good guns.

30-06 is the most common cal for the pre 64 Model 70s. You should be able to get one of those for around $700. On gunbroker, auction no 287316799 is one with a different stock.

I landed this great 1968 FN Browning hi-power safari grade 30-06 for a little over $700 earlier this year.

OP,

I have to ask what you're planning to do with it? If you're planning to hunt, will you be dragging it around in the mountains or sitting in a stand? The nice rifles mentioned above will shoot extremely well but will also get a thrashing if you take it out for a "walk-stalk" hunt. Plus weight could be an issue depending on how far you plan to carry your rifle. Some food for thoughts.

S99, you don't have to forget, but "to forgive is divine". Food for your thoughts.

A drunk American driver killed my BIL, but I can't follow your line of thoughts.

Nothing wrong with a Browning or Howa rifle IMO.

For $700, you can buy a new rifle that will be worth an easy $550 a week later, or you can buy a classic rifle that will be worth $50 more than you paid for it a day later if you know what you are doing. The older guns will be built to a high standard, be classics, and will never depreciate. They will shoot as well or better than anything else you can buy.

Great Stuff: Pre 64 Model 70's. Any FN Commercial Mauser. Husquavarna Mausers (Swedish), Sakos (Finnish).

Very Good stuff: Remington 700's, Post 64 Winchester Model 70's, Interarms Mausers.

Variable stuff: Custom rifles built on Mauser and Springfield actions. Many are lovely. Many are amateurish. If you know what you are looking at you can find great stuff. The fact that you are asking here for advice "probably" means you will not know what to look for. But do not overlook these... a gut feeling can tell you a lot.

Not desirable: Anything with a glossy epoxy stock, white line spacers, or sharp monte-carlo type stocks. These were fashion fads in the 60's and 70's that are now a bit of a joke among those who appreciate good rifles. Styling driven by Weatherby... "modern" as viewed in the early space-age now is really dated.

For $700 I could come home with something REALLY nice from any large gunshow. It would most definately not be a Browning A Bolt.

Too bad you aren't down here in Fl. One of the members on the Fl Shooters Network form is trying to sell a beautiful Rem 700. He's down to $300 with no takers still.

FedEx ground wouldn't be more than $30. Overnight would probably cost close to $100. No need ship a rifle overnight anyway.

I would be tempted to hunt down a nice 1903 Springfield. That way you could have the "original" 30-06. For $700 (or less) you should be able to find one that hasn't been hacked-up, molested, or mistreated.

I agree with other posts though, it all depends what you're planning to do.
