- I shoot at Target Masters and the Santa Clara county
sports range on a regular basis - but have not been to
the new Reeds indoor range since it used to be
"National Shooting Club"..

I shot at Target Masters West in Milpitas when I lived in the People's Republic of California, but there were too many illegal aliens with no shooting skills and virtually no adult supervision for me to go there very often. When Reed's opened a range in the former National Shooting Club, I resumed shooting there every week: it was much cleaner, and there was actual adult supervision on the range. I was unaware of the Santa Clara county range.
 
I shoot almost exclusively at Target Masters. It is only 10 minutes from my house. I actually prefer Reed's , but have only shot there a handful of times because it costs a little more and is further away. I'll shoot at the San Leandro range once in a blue moon but like the other ranges better. Funny, I've never heard of the Santa Clara range either.

- This is a really nice place to go, up in the hills
in South San Jose, CA - right off Bernal Rd. and
"Old Metcalf Road"... 10 bucks to shoot outdoors
all day for one 25/35/50 yard pistol stall..

- It's very well organized with multiple on premises
range masters, and cease-fires called every 20
minutes. I used to love this place.. Still do..

I've been going to both Reed's and TM and they're both $10/hr. Seems Reed's is a little bit more strict about keeping track of time but I've been paying the same rate at both places. Am I missing some hidden discounts here???

I like reeds because it's got better lighting and it's roomier. I don't see any difference in the shooters or supervision.
 
Search for "Jackson Arms" and you will find my TWO THUMBS DOWN review for terrible service and a place filled with gangbangers.

Reed's Indoor Range is clean, well lit, well stocked and well staffed (including at least one TFL member - SarcasmGuy). They may soon even have a nice webpage, if I have my way (proposal is in their hands... haven't heard a peep).

Now - an outdoor range where I can shoot all day for $10 sounds nice... I'll have to check that place out. I always hate that feeling of walking down range, though... hard not to be paranoid about newbies making an 'Accidental Discharge'... ugh.
 
That's outdated info. It's been $10/hr as long as I've been going to Target Masters (couple of times a week since early July). It's posted right on the wall at the shop... $10/hr.

Places to Shoot in the Bay Area

Sven, you might checkout Sunnyvale Rod & Gun Club range. Nice facility. Outdoor range much closer to you than Field Sports county park. You don't have to be a member to use, but open to public on certain days... check their website.
 
At Target Masters, I pay $8 to shoot. I bought a $20 membership which gives me $2 off shooting and $10 off transfers and purchases. Not much, but it's paid for itself several times over. The downside is that they took my thumbprint :confused: . Plus the targets are a bit cheaper than Reed's.

I think the Jackson range is the worst in the area. It costs twice as much to shoot there, and the facility is downright grungy. Ventilation is almost non-existant. I was tasting sulfur an hour after I left. :barf:
 
I am a discount card holder at San Leandro Rifle & Pistol Range and usually shoot there every Saturday for a mere $4.00. The range is owned by the San Leandro Optimist Club. Location is easy, just exit on Davis St. on 880 and take it heading west all the way down, its right next to the local dump.

There are indoor lanes that go up to 50ft. I shoot primarily outdoor on the 12, 25, 50yd pistol range or on the 100yd rifle range (can only shoot hp or sp bullets on the 100yd rifle range though, no fmj allowed).
 
I've given up on Target Masters. It's dirty, poorly lit, has narrow lanes, they make you fill out 50 release forms every time you go, and they're so used to dealing with riff-raff they don't know how to treat a gentleman. It's Reed's for me from now on.

I'd pay $2/hour extra just to not have dudes shooting their gun sideways, rapid fire (I saw this at Jackson Arms).
 
Jackson Arms is under new management. Hopefully it is better.

As far as I recall, no injuries/fatalities @ Jackson Arms so far.

At least 2 fatalities @ Targetmasters.

Reeds had a hostage takeover once (back when it was called National Shooting Club), resulted in the perp being shot.
 
The fatalities at Targetmasters were self-induced. With a simple policy change other like minded individuals have been forced to try it elsewhere.
 
It's been a little over two years since I lived in the area but I used to go
to a small, indoor range run by I think the city of San Jose. It was just north
of the fairgrounds on one of the numbered streets like 8th or 10th. You
could drive right by it and never notice. Cost $3. It only had about 6-8 lanes
and was supervised. Don't know if it's still there, I got out of the PRK.

Membership is $50 per year. Very much like a co-operative enterprise. All members shoot free (exception: trapshooting $2.50 per round of 25 birds).

Outdoor covered range- 100yd rifle, 25 and 50 yd pistol lines. About 10 rifle, 10 pistol, and 10 .22LR lanes. On "member days" which are M, W, TH, the range is closed to the public. On these days, members can shoot whatever (rifle, pistol, shotgun) they bring without the usual 15 minute break intervals for target changes (No 50 BMG nor full auto allowed). Steel plate or IDPA on W afternoons, Trap TU night.

In order to hold the membership fee to $50 a year, each new member must perform 20 hours of range-duty (maintenance, yard cleanup, painting, etc) every 6 months for only the first year. Along with the membership, a "permanent" requirement is performance of 'range officer-like' duty once every 3 months (8 hours required) or every 2 months (5 hours required). Meetings every 1st TH of the month @ 7:00pm; dinner is served (they seem to serve NY steaks a lot, but it's free to all.)

No gangbangers. Anyone shooting sideways is drop-kicked out the gate (just kidding, but you get the idea). At least one rangemaster and 2-3 attendants constantly watching gun handling. I don't want it to sound like Nazis patrol the firing lines, but we're certainly very serious about gun safety (on the firing line).

FFL available to members for gun transfers and reloading component purchases.
