3" Magnum 00 Buck and slugs

I bought a police trade in Mossberg 500 yesterday. I do not know a specific model number or version, but it is chambered to accept 2 3/4" and 3" shells. When I bought the gun I bought some 3" 00 Buck and Slugs. They are both marked "Magnum." Can I safely fire these in my Mossberg? I did a search for this, and found no conclusive answer.

3 inch buck or slug magnum=black shoulder. I guess I'm a wimp. I took my win 1300 out last weekend and shot about 50 rounds of buck and slugs, 2 3/4 inch, and my shoulder has this big huge black and blue mark. The only thing that makes me really mad about it is that my son's bruise is bigger than mine.

As stated. the "Magnum" shells will work fine in your gun. Most of us stick with the 2 3/4 loads as they work fine as well without the increased recoil and cost.

Nuts, you've gotten a good shotgun. It sounds like you're not very experienced in shotgunning. A couple suggestions....

Get some lessons from a qualified instructor.

For starting out, use the lightest loads you can find, NOT 3" magnums. The Walmart 4 pack sleeves and the 1 oz generic "Dove and Quail" loads are good choices. Those mags will come in handy once your form is good and you're inured to the recoil.

Do a search here for threads on starting out, proper mounting technique, and so on. This IS the best shotgun resource on the Net.

HTH....

To all,

Thanks for the info.

Dave,

I am not very experienced with shotguns. To be honest, I have never fired a shot gun. My experience is mostly in rifles-I prefer bolt action. I am sure I can handle a 12 ga. as I shoot mostly .30-06. I am currently taking a hunter education class-not on firearms, but general hunting info. I was thinking about taking a class from a local police trainer that also works at a range-$75 per class that lasts two nights. He does rifle, handgun and shotgun.

I purchased 300 rounds of various loads when I bought the gun. I got a 250 round case of 2 3/4" Remington 7 1/2 shot from Wally World. I also picked up some various manufacturers slugs and 00 Buck at the store I got the 500 from. I want to see what will work best for HD in the 00 Buck, and I even see #1 recommended for HD. I want to practice at the range with the 7 1/2 shot. I need to buy some clays too.

You're quite welcome, Nuts. A couple things...

First, a 7 1/4 lb shotgun(Probably heavier than your 500) firing a 1 1/4 oz Brenneke slug has about the same free recoil as a 9 lb 375 H&H firing the usual 275 gr load.

IIRC, the last '06 I had packed about 30 ft/lbs of free recoil with its 9 lbs loaded weight and 165gr bullet.

That 12 will go maybe 50 lbs, tho my math or memory may be off a tad.

And few riflemen stand there and shoot off 250 rounds a day like some trap, skeet and SC fanatics do. Kick is cumulative.

Don't let this throw you. With good instruction, most folks willing to learn can fire shotguns amazingly well.

And the lack of good instruction is why there's so many folks who do not shoot their shotguns well, or even at all.

If there's questions, sing out, we've got a very good bunch here to answer them....

You are not a wimp. I am 6'4", and about 325 lbs. and have never been recoil sensitive. I can only stand to shoot a tube full of Winchester 000 3" mags out of my 590, and non of my shooting buddies wanted to shoot more than one or two before handing it back to me. None of us are serious shotgunners, though. A buddy of mine has a .45-70 lever gun, and I can't tell which hurts more to shoot.

I *do* keep a handful of the XX as I put it "in case of evil dead zombies". :)

Thinking about a Compstock...

3" Mag of 00 buck is as much recoil as I care to experience. And I don't care to experience it very often.

Try shooting

that 3" 00 buck (S&B 15 pellet) with an ATI folding stock (VERY small surface area on butt)....Most painful, dude! But in HD situation that's the last thing I'll worry about
