3 in 1 oil on firearms?

I been using super tech lube spray when wiping down my guns but I was wondering if 3 in 1 would be a good oil to use just a little bit to clean the chamber with a towel and then clean the inside of the barrel or muzzle! Im not talking about pouring it on but just simply cleaning the guns. I got scared when I heard what 3 in 1 oil and other petroleum lubes can do to a break barrel spring action pellet gun so I figured I would ask! Thanks

I've never used it on gun but I have fixed a many a squeaky doors and bar stools. Haha. I'm positive it would do wonders on a squeaky wheel gun. :D. In all seriousness, that stuff is amazing and would use it as gun lube. Its got to be better than rem oil.

It's what I use and is just a light machine oil, which should be just the thing for gun oil. It's probably very very similar to Rem Oil or just plain old sewing machine oil.

I have a few 50+ year old guns that are in good shape and were probably cleaned with little else before I inherited them.

I used 3 in 1 when I bought my first gun. I would use it now if it was handy.
I think folks get excited by the latest miracle lube. I have never had a malfunction that I could in any way attribute to the lube.

I have been using Mobile 1 for years, and it works as well as the miracle lubes, and is a lot less expensive. If I thought the latest was really better then I would pay the price, but what do I want it to do except lube and that the gun work correctly?

I got a bunch of FP10 and such lubes, but they do no better than Mobile 1. Save your money and buy ammo with the difference between Mobile 1 and Miracle #10000.

I guess they've changed it ! It used to be many years ago the worst !! It would readily oxidize into a varnish .I've cleaned guns for people who used it .It was a major job to remove that varnish .Not for me . Use Mobil 1 or other synthetic oils . I still us Mobil DTE which is a very highly refined turbine oil .
3in1 was bought up by WD-40 , what a wonderful pair ! :barf:

3in1 oil is an extremely good product. Essentially it was used to lube machine parts (sewing machines, typewriters, clocks, etc.). It was also used as a penetrating oil untill the advent of liquid wrench, WD-40, and others. I does not penetrate as well and those but it dosnt disapate either so your lubed part remains lubed longer.

I used it on my BB rifle that I got when I was 6 and on my pellet rifle that I recieved when I was 8. Ive also used it throughout my years on many things including firearms. That means that I have used this product 59 years with great success. When I run out of gun oil, out comes the old reliable 3in1.

By the way, the old BB and pellet rifles used to have piston cups made of leather instead of rubber and had to be oiled occasionally. The old coleman lanterns and stoves were the same way. A couple of drops of 3in1, wait 5 minutes, and they would pump like new.

3 in 1 is fine for slow action guns

For semi auto, I would (and do) use Mobil 1 as its a much harsher nasty dirty environment that needs a better lube .

Well, RC20 mentioned Mobil 1, but the topic is not about Mobil 1 motor oil.

the topic was a product literally named 3 in 1 oil. There's actually a whole line of 3 in 1 products

The oil was named '3 in 1' because it does three things:

Lubricates
protects
stops rust

Now, I would say that "stops rust" and "protects" is the same thing but whatever. It's a good product

I see WD40 mentioned. WD40 is a lousy lubricant. It's quite a good cleaner that has some lubricating properties and it's very good at what it's supposed to do but too many people confuse WD40 with a great lubricant. It's a water displacing cleaner. much better lubricating oils are out there. As a penetrating oil or a cleaner, I really like WD40 but P'blaster is a better penetrant. I spray down my black powder revolver liberally with WD40 after I clean it- by boiling the parts in a pot of soapy water. Then a bath of WD40, a wipe down, lube, and it's clean, no water for rust to start forming

Yes, remember 3-in-1 is now a brand not a product, so look closely when you pick up a can of 3-in-1, be sure it is the oil and not, for instance, a penetrant. Unless you want a penetrant.

Not sure I would use it for "just simply cleaning the guns" as the OP said, but as should lube just fine.

That said - been using Mobil 1 oil for years and it is cheaper than 3-in-1.
