3 in 00 Buck

whats yalls expierence with it? I shot it today and it was a bit of a shock. 2 3/4 in my opinion aint to bad but the three's seemed worse i can only imagine 00 buck being fired out of a 3.5 i think it would be terrifying. i was using a winchester defender 18 in barrel and a stock reciol pad. i had also just used a smith and wesson 500 so maybe it all just shook me up.
 
I've only shot 2-3/4" Magnum bucks, and that's enough for me. They're the biggest my shotties will handle, and maybe that's good thing. I have shot a 3" once, but that was a big, heavy Marlin pump gun (much heavier than my SxS doubles), and I can't imagine what a 3.5" would be like. Too scary for me! ;)
 
I shot about 20 rounds of the stuff with my 870 last week. Good load, good patterning at 30 yards and lots of nasty little hole on the target.

I never found the 3 inch 00 bucks to be too harsh. the other guy who was shooting a SxS coach gun shot one round of the two 3 inch shells I gave him and gave me back the other one.:D
 
maybe a good recoil bad makes the diffrence caus ei can shoot 2 3/4 slugs and buck out all day but that rung me a lil bit. or maybe it was cause it was my first time shooting that stuff.
 
i have a mossy 835, which im pretty proud of and i have shot of plenty of 3.5 number 5 turkey loads, and those kick like none other. Ive done 3 rounds, back to back to BACK and that is very killer, on your shoulder. I imagine 00 or triple ought buck in the 3.5 would feel like a 8 bore, haha and i don't see much advantage a 3" really has over 2 3/4. I have plenty of 3" buckshot loads in my house, and i have to go pattern them one of these days.
 
Well, it's 15 pellets versus 9, so I see 6 reasons why 3" is better than 2 3/4"

um, you guys do know to push with the non-shooting hand, right?
 
yeah, more lead is more stopping power, is a good concept. But if 9 00 pellets work, work well and have been working for years, why add more recoil to it? sure theres circumstances where more pellets would be a bonus, but from my standpoint all you need is 9 pellets, for atleast human threats. Extra kick and extra muzzleblast never helped anybody in a gun fight, and if its a in the home gun then thats all you need.
 
you will be surprised how easy it is to miss with a HD shotgun(short barrel, IC barrel, etc).

If 2 3/4" works, I don't see why not, in fact I have a few dozen boxes laying around. But 3 inch shells are what sits in my shotgun.
 
id have to say the worst recoil iv ever felt would be a 3" with 2 ounces of 4 shot out of my Rossi single shot :eek:. only took one shot for me to get a recoil pad for it.

75 ft lbs of recoil? Ouch.. I have a little Savage 24D / 20 gauge with a 3" chamber. My dad cut the stock down for me and I hunted with that for years. It was my trapping gun. I made the mistake of clicking it to shotgun one time and thinking I was firing the 22mag.. Still have the mark to prove it..
I'm not too fond of 12 gauge slugs in my 870. When i see a deer I don't think about it but target shooting is hell.
My Uncle was my Turkey hunting mentor. He could call them better than anyone I ever seen. His shotgun was a NEF 10 gauge w/a 3.5" chamber. He said, never have your shoulder rested against a tree when shooting it. He said you'll be paralyzed for a while. He was speaking from experience. I believe it.
 
I fired some 3" magnums out of my Rossi Overland Coach Gun way back in 1988, took a week for the discoloration to disappear. Ouch. Of course I am
not an experienced shotgunner, I was 99% a handgunner back then.
 
i don't want to be a hypocrite, cause i DO have 3" shells, and i have 2 shells in the tube, first is 23/4 which gets jacked into the gun, second is a 3" which i load more 2/34 on top of tell its topped off, with a total of 5 in the gun. I use 1 buck for the most part with the last one in the gun being the 3" with 15 pellets. I figure by then ill be woken up, and probably outside so that extra amount of gunpowder doesnt matter. If you think that 3" works for u, then try firing that in a small indoor type gun range setting without ear muffs... i guarentee ur gonna be hearing bells for a couple days, if you don't get knocked out from the percussion
 
I can 1up the nef winchester combo,mossy 835 with synthetic furniture,rifled slug barrel,3.5in lightfield commanders+scope=a pair of busted oakley's and one hell of a headache.
