3" champered barrel on older wingmaster

Could someone confirm something I was told by a friend (who knows a lot about guns). I have two wingmasters....an 870 magnum and an older one that was 2 3/4" only (says on the barrel). My friend said that on the wingmasters there is no difference between the older model's reciever and the magnum and that you can put a 3" chambered barrel on any wingmaster with no ill effects. Is this true or is this the one time i have known my friend to be wrong?

if your serial # on the wingmaster ends in v or x, that means your receiver is meant to handle only 2 3/4" shells, regardless of what it says on the bbl.

Both the barrel and receiver have to be 3" capable. The ejector assembly is fdifferent, and if it is changed to the magnum, that receiver will work with the longer shells.

However, it takes a smith or the factory to do this. The receiver needs a refinish after also.

However, if you use just 2 3/4" shells, the longer chamber on the magnum barrel will handle them OK.

HTH....

As above, you can put a 3" chambered barrel on an older 2 3/4" receiver, but the gun will not be able to eject the longer shells.

An older 2 3/4" receiver can be converted to 3" Magnum by having the ejector replaced with a longer Magnum ejector assembly.

You are correct. The ejection port is identical.

As others have said, it is the ejector (only) that is different. To convert a 2 3/4" gun (870) you need two things. 1. A 3" barrel. 2. A new ejector.

As an aside, I had a 3" 870 here that had no ejector. It ejected just fine. I had one put in when it was at ARS for refinishing though.
