Gentlemen,

Looking to purchase my 2nd shotgun (my current weapon is a Mossberg 590 with extended mag) - I think the recoil is a little excessive. In fact the last time I did a 3 gun competition - it beat the hell out of my shoulder - so my quandry is:

1) Buy a compstock, install and keep the weapon.

2) Buy a 2nd shotgun.

If I were to purchase a 2nd gun - give me your recommendations - criteria:

Main use: HD and competition (3 gun tactical)

reliability

low recoil.

Currently considering 1100 remington, HK Benelli, and Fabarm.

Anyone?

The Winchester/Brownig guns are the fastest around and as reliable as most others. The Remington will cause more problems down the road than the Win/Brn, Benelli. SX 2 would be my choice for 3 gun.

Shortening the stock and installing a quality recoil pad can do wonders for felt recoil in a shotgun. Adding a little weight can really help to. Hogue makes a short stock and that includes a pretty good recoil pad. Just add a plastic baggy of steel or lead shot wrapped up with tape inside it.

Get your shotgun fitted to you and learn to use it. No slam there, but so many folks I see complaining about kick really do not hold their weapon correctly.

Use both hands to pull the weapon into the body. Stand behind, not beside the shotgun so your whole upper body absorbs the push instead of a butt shaped and sized patch of outraged pain receptors on your upper arm or shoulder.

Lean into the shot. Your nose should be in front of the toes on your leading foot.

And start off with the lightest loads you can find. Winchester's Feather target loads are nigh perfect. Practice with these, walk before runnng....

HTH.....
