280 Ross Reloading

A friend has acquired a pristine 280 Halger that has the original .287 diameter groove dimensions so will need a supply of 280 Ross brass. Anyone know where to get brass for this cartridge?

280 Ross hasn't been made for roughly 100 years. Might be makeable out of .275 H&H flanged. That'd be pricey.

These guys(up here) say they have proper diameter bullets, but they ain't cheap.

The 280 Ross was based on the 303 Magnum, another oddball cartridge. The head size is similar to nothing else that is available. Dominion loaded it until the 1960s or 1970s, so you may find a few cases at a gun show. You could buy base-stripping dies and make it from 450 NE or 416 Rigby brass, but that involves a lot of expense and a lot of work. Any way you look at it, shooting that old beast will not be an easy undertaking. Unless you opt for rebarrelling it, then you can choose your own chambering.

Relatively speaking, 375 Ruger seems to be a very attractive starting point. MidwayUSA sells Woodleigh 275 bullets (.288") for $.78 ea., so this may be happening before too long.

2241 I am new to this forum, but I have 280 Ross brass and bullets. PM me if that is possible , as I would rather not give my phone number out on the forum. The 1910 Ross was my Dads favorite hunting rifle, but ammunition was always a problem. Years ago I traded some 30 Newton cases for unfired Ross cases. I hope to hear from you. Grant.

Click on the 280 Ross line for details, it looks like a two die set is about $138, with multiple options for accessory dies. They are a good company to deal with, you may want to call them to discuss your best options.

Nonte's Cartridge conversion book says 280 Ross can be made from 300 H&H. Not a
super easy task, it involves a bit of lathe work on the belt. Much easier if you can source some 280 brass.

This has been an interesting quest. Thank you to all who have offered advice and assistance. I have forwarded all the leads for brass, bullets, and dies to the gentleman who owns the rifle. When/If he decides to proceed or sell me the rifle, I will revive this thread and post photos of the completed project and hopefully some awesome targets.

Ross brass

I still have 280 Ross brass and bullets for sale. Someone from this forum contacted me and had me pull the bullets from the loaded cases so shipping would be easy, and then I never heard from him again. If anyone is SERIOUSLY interested please PM me and we can make this work. Thanks, Grant.
