28 gauge derringer, possible BATF approval?

According to the statements I've read from Taurus, their 28 gauge revolver has not been disapproved by the BATF. Apparently as long as the end of the barrel is at least .50 it's legal. Is there any reason someone couldn't make a 28 gauge derringer then, following the same guidelines?

The 28 gauge is about .55 cal. There would need to be a fair amount of taper to get down to a .50 cal barrel and pressures might be too high.

Of course, the BATFE will end up doing whatever they want, to be honest.

Seems like a silly way to break your wrist and your nose, though. If you want to do that, a dirtbike accident is significantly cooler.

After reading these posts - I'm still lost as to why anyone would want a 28 gauge deringer?? Seems pretty worthless unles you're going to hunt quail or pheasants . . . close up. ?? :):D

Does a round like the 500 S&W have to be right up close to the forcing cone of a revolver? Or can it "jump" a little ways to the the forcing cone.

Because it wouldn't be that far of a stretch to make 2½" inch cylinders and fit a 30 gauge Shotgun shell in there.

I'm having trouble with my math, but I think a 500 S&W would be a 33 a gauge shotgun shell.
Close. More like a 36, perhaps a 37 gauge.

I found this chart:

(I only looked it up because I was curious myself, and when I found a conversion factor, I also found that 36 gauge is .506 cal. after I scrolled down a little farther)

Why does anyone want a .410 derringer or a .410 revolver? Apparently a lot of people do, as Taurus can't make them fast enough. Why wouldn't 28ga be better than .410?

C0untZer0 As to the OP - I think 28ga = .55" isn't that larger than 50 cal?

You didn't read my post. I said the end of the barrel would have to be reduced to .50, as Taurus did with their revolver.

oneounceload The 28b gauge guns from Taurus are a non-issue - the ATF said no

Where and when did the ATF ever say no? Is this hearsay or do you have a link to a ATF ruling?

Why would it break your wrist or nose, anymore than firing a .454 Casull or .500 S&W?

You go fire one round of .500 S&W through a DERRINGER, and have your caregivers get back to us on the results, but advise them up front NOT to include graphic photos.
