28 Ga. Shotshells

:) I just became the proud owner of a 28 Ga., O/U. This is my first shotgun, in this gauge. I shall use it for some sporting clays, some trap and carry it when I walk up on my ridge in search of grouse. What size
shells and shot are available?
Thanks!

Ahh, the 28ga, another one bites the dust. :D

If you plan on doing very much shooting at all you would be wise to invest in a reloader. Factory offerings are usually sufficient, but it's hard to come by some of the heavier shot loads. It is real hard to find 4's, 5's' and sometimes 6's in a 28ga. Fiochi has a decent variety if you can find a stocking dealer. There are no Magnum shells in 28ga, 2 3/4" is all you get, but is usually quite enough for this remarkable little gun. I have 4 or 5 of these guns that I use all the time. The best for reloading at this time in my opinion is the Remington STS target shells.

So what kind of O/U did you get.

Yes, another smart man getting a 28 guage. Most of the loads for the 28 seem to be for skeet shooters. All I have noticed around here is 7 1/2, 8 and 9 shot sizes. Some other brands may come in 6's etc. I have to agree with reloading if you are going to shoot it a lot as 28's usually sell for around $7.00 a box. Reloading a 28 make a lot of sense as they use smaller powder and shot charges, so you can load for a lot less than a 12. Happy shooting

Ah! Another shooter who has seen the light!!!:D

Remington makes field loads in what they term Hi Brass? I have some in #6 shot and they will eventually be used for hunting. I have used the same loads in 7.5 shot for sporting clays and they work great on long birds.

Federal has field loads as well as Fiocchi. I have not used them myself.

I second the Reloader. You can then create your own loads with any size shot.

Federal even makes a Gold Medal load of #8-1/2 running at 1230 fps.

Shopping for 28ga. is my new hobby within a hobby. I can't believe some stores want $11.99 a box for some of the field loads. I'd rather pay 50 cents a shell for old paper shells at the gun show and shoot them.

I'll buy factory 12 & 20s but they are just too proud of their 28s. So I purchased a MEC reloader just for the 28. It was a really good way to spend a 100 and even the wife can use it.

I would say if you are going to shoot a 28 or a 410 very much,, reloading is the only way to go. I have a MEC 9000 for 12 ,but it is hardly worth it any more as I can buy them for as little as 3.40 a box. It costs me almost that much to reload 12 guage. On the other hand 28 and 410 run anywhere from $7.00 and UP and I can reload them for a lot less per shell than 12 guage

Don't forget, you can sell the AAHS hulls for a dime or more apiece. That knocks the price down $2.50+ a box.

Oh, and congratulations on your new shotgun. What did you get?

Congrats!

:D

Yeah well I'm supposed to post something in 28 ga threads for some reason...:p

28 Ga.

Thanks, for the info. Used to reload for 12 Ga. when I shot Trap. My local Wally-World sells "AA" 's for $6.77. So I suppose I shall use then, for now.:)

Rem STS or Win AA target loads are the best buy in 28ga. If you buy by the "Flat" (case of 10 boxes) you might save a few dollars. They are the best hulls for reloading IMHO.
