.270 Winchester.. What Powder?

Want to get into reloading the .270 ammo, but with all the powders I have no idea what is good. Any one have good recommendations? Thanks all

Intended use/bullet weight? Barrel length?

It is a good to know what it is you are trying to do before sending you in a direction......

I have had good luck with H380, IMR and H4350, IMR 4895, IMR 4064, IMR 4831 and Win 760, I use more H380 than anything else, it works pretty good all around.

I've used IMR4064, H335 (90, 100, 110gr varmit bullets, and 130 gr reduced loads for the kiddoes), H414, H4831 and H4831sc with 130's, and H1000 and IMR 7828 with 140's and 150's...... 24" barrel 1:10 twist

H1000 was a bust.

IMR4064 has been the most consistent for me, and is economical as well.

If you want max velocities, (3100 for 130's) you'll do better with slower powders like H4831 ..... my best velocities came with the IMR 7828 ..... compressed loads (60gr, IIRC!) and magnum primers .... hell on brass.

I have had good results with IMR or H 4350 but I like the way H-4895 works on a 130 grain 270 bullet.

Good Luck and try different powders to see how they do in your gun.

H1000

I was tempted to try H1000, but hate to drop $25 on a pound of it just to find out it's too slow for the .270 Win, even if Hodgdon does carry load data for it--and with Jimbob's reply above, I'll probably not bother.

My favorite right now is H4831SC, although I'm tempted to try one degree slower (H1000) or faster (IMR4350) just to see if I can tighten it up even more. I'm pretty much sticking with 130 gr bullets.

IMR 4831 was Jack O'Connor's favorite load -- worked then, works now.

Newer powders might work better, especially fine-grained ball powders of about the same speed.

I have been mucking around with my FN Deluxe in 270 Win.

My best groups were with the tested loads in Varget, AA4350, and IMR 4064.

I might be having blown groups due to the pulled Federal Fusion bullets I bought because the Nosler's and Speers shoot better.

The highest velocity is with AA4350 and it shot a good group.

The rifle did not like Federal 130 grain factory though it was the highest velocity.

Anyway, if you try any of the 4350's you will find that 4350 is an outstanding powder in many bolt gun cartridges.

Changing primers with Varget really did not effect the velocity, which is good.

H4550 130 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, aim for the front 1/3 of the animal, works to 500 yards, they only stagger 50 feet.

130 gr.Sierra gk ahead of 55.0 gr of IMR 4350 just a touch over 3000 fps. out of my 22 in bbl. Win.FWT. 3 shot groups from this light bbl are consistently under 1 in.@ 100 m.

Nosler 130 gr Ballistic Tips over a near max load of H4831sc. Shoots great and hits hard. No telling how many deer and pigs I've taken with that load. If I wasn't using that powder, I'd probably use IMR 4831.

As much as I'd love to hunt with my Howa, dumbass Ohio laws say that I can't hunt with it. Just strictly for plinking and eventually going on hunting trips. :D

IMR 4831 was Jack O'Connor's favorite load -- worked then, works now.

I think that was H4831, not IMR4831. Incidentally, these two are not identical and neither is loading data.
