270 factory loads

I would like to duplicate Federal premium 270 loads for a friend of mine, I know they shoot 130 gr Sierra Game kings, is there a way to find out what kind of powder is in them or should I just take one apart? I know I can weigh the charge but to tell what powder it is by looking might be tough.

there is no way to tell which powder Federal used and probably isn't a canister grade powder anyway. the best way is to chronograph the load and work with the various reloading manuals and see what powders look to be in that range of performance

In most cases the factory ammo doesn't use a canister grade powder like you or I would pick up at the LGS. They have batches blended to fit the criteria they need to produce the lot of ammo they are loading at the time.

THe best you can do to replicate their loads is to chronograph them, use the bullets seated to the same OAL, and work up with a known charge weight in a similar or standard burn rate for the caliber your working with. In this case it might be IMR or H4350 or similarly one of the 4831's.

If you know the velocity, and the bullets it isn't hard to come up real close to their performance and sometimes surpass it, depending on what you see with your pressures. In my .308, I found that a suitable load of H-4895 under the Remington bulk 150gr CL's shoots a little more accurately than the factory load at about the same velocity. This suits me fine in that I only use this for hunting at ranges of around 150yds or less, but it is also fully capable of reaching out on occasion to 350+ when I get a good rest and settle on a big feral hog.

130 gr Sierra GK or Nosler BT over 59 gr of H 4831sc. Give or take a smidgen of powder, and that's your load. It is also a max load, so work up to it carefully.

My .270 Loves a 130gr Nosler Accubond and a very stiff charge of IMR4831...

This LOAD IS SAFE IN MY RIFLE and IS ABOVE PUBLISHED MAX DATA USE WITH CAUTION!!!

Tikka T3 Lite 22 7/16" barrel
.270 Winchester
Winchester Brass
130gr Accubond COAL 3.305
57gr IMR 4831
Rem 9 1/2 primer
3019fps

It shoots 3 shots under 3/4 MOA everytime I take it to the range

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond or not covered by currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The Firing Line, nor the staff of TFL assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.
DANGER DANGER DO NOT USE THIS LOAD- just answering the OP's question DANGER DANGER

O'Connor's load was 62 grains of H4831 under a 130 grain bullet.

DANGER DO NOT USE THE ABOVE LOAD IT IS ABOVE MAX AND ITS USE MAY IMPLODE THE UNIVERSE

I have found that even 59 grains of H4831 under a 130 grain bullet is quite punishing in my Ruger American. 55.5 grains gets me an average velocity of 2752 fps with an SD of 18.3 out of a 22 inch barrel and is reliably accurate.

I agree with the use a chronograph and clock the factory load first. Then use one of the 4530's, 4831's or either version of IMR7828/7828SSC (prefer the later as it runs though a powder measure better but otherwise they're the same powder) Shouldn't be all that hard to find a load that matches the one being used.

Other powder options that have also worked well with the .270 Win would include H-414 or W-760, Reloder 22, and my personal choice, Reloder 17. Just in case you can't locate one of the 4350's or 4831's.

A bit of nostalgia

Back when I was much younger I ran across some of the early Hodgdon surplus H4831 that had been packaged in a paper bag, I found it to be slower burning powder than the current lots of H4831 available in the early 70's. The fellow I purchased the powder from couldn't remember when he purchased the powder but assured me the powder was in the original bag. Based on what I remember it was a military surplus powder, I have no idea what it was loaded in for the military!! Too bad I didn't keep the powder and the bag, non the less it was an interesting encounter with the older fellow, back in those days not many people loaded ammunition for their personal use.. Non the less H4831 is a perfect powder for a .270 and similar rounds and quite popular with people that enjoy loading their ammunition..

I used 130gr Nosler Soft Point bullet with 59grs of H4831 in a W-W case OAL 3.315", this was way before I had a chrony so I have no idea of velocity, non the less this load was sub MOA in a push feed Winchester model 70 rifle.. William
