270/308

Is anyone messing with this wildcat? I’ve got a extra 700 action with a .308 barrel that’s just begging for something custom. And before anyone mentions it, no I have zero interest in the 7-08 due to it would be the only cartridge I would have in a .284 diameter. Hence, why I already have plenty of .277’s for my 6.8spc, .277wlv, and .270win. Wasn’t there also a AI variant if I remember right?

Yes, you could neck the .270 up to .308...or, you could just get a 30-06. You are joking right?

Nothing bad about re-necking 308 cases for 27 caliber bullets, It's been done for 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 33 and 35 caliber bullets before.

A friend had a matching set of Sako rifles chambered for all such cartridges. The 30-06 case has been modified the same way.

Dahermit: Go the other way. I’m talking about taking a .308 casing and necking it down to a .277 diameter bullet.

Luckily I’ve got a buddy that’s a smith and builds custom rifles regularly. He’s saying that he can get everything including a set of dies. And I’ve been talking with McGowen about a barrel and they can do it. I might just have to pull the trigger anyways and see what happens lol.

I helped do exactly that about 45 years ago in Nevada with a man that thought it would be a very cool round. It was too. But not long after that we started working with the 7-08s.

I can't see ANYTHING the 270/308 Wildcat could do any better then a standard 7-08.

Some folks want to have something no one else has. There is no logical reason for it. They just want it. So I suppose that's a "reason" after all.

Bullets of high quality are made in both .277" and in .284" and both can be driven at about the same speeds. Both will do the same things in the real world.
But spending a LOT more money to have something that no one else has is a "reason" only known to the one spending the money, when what you end up with is not really better in any way.

I guess it would be possible to make a car frame and drive system set up to use 3 tires of the same size and one that was different size so you can be unique, and if you were to spend enough money you could get a differential made to drive the one off-size wheel so it's coverage on the ground would be the same as the other 3 wheels. You'd have something very unique. No one else would have one.

But no one else would want one either, because if you did spend as much money as needed to get it to do as well as a standard car with 4 wheels of the same size, you'd have something "just as good" and you'd have the only one ------- that was far more expensive---- and JUST AS GOOD.

Just as!
No better mind you.
But Just as good.

I see no merit in the idea............but that's just me.

Wyosmith: That kinda reminds me of a rifle my grandfather built years ago. He built a 03 action chambered in .270IHMSA. He was a tinkerer. Great shooting rifle too. We called it his Pre-6.8spc since his base cartridge was .257Roberts if I remember right. I’m wanting something similar but with more readily available brass.

When you said: "...a extra 700 action with a .308 barrel..." I assumed you wanted to use the barrel.
