260 Remington for long range ?

just about decided on this caliber for an open F class barrel, anyone here shooting it at 800 - 1000 yards? Seems to have good barrel life, decent case capacity, good die selection and bullet choices.

So far I am fence sitting on the 6BR . Trying to talk myself into a 6 BRX or 6 Dasher but the custom dies and case forming etc have pretty much ruled them out also, more hassle/money than what little would be gained is worth. Ruled out 6XC, 6.5 x 47, 6.5 Creedmore, and 6.5 x 284 for various reasons. So far everything looks pretty positive on the 260. Any thoughts either pro or con are welcome.

The .260 Rem seems to be the one as of now, They are winning the 1000 yard matches were I shoot, and factory ammo is avalible along with factory made rifles. It's on my wish list. Shoot safe
 
Thanks Oak, my club is limited to 800 as of now but hopefully we will have a 1000 yard range in a year or so. A few of the guys are playing with the magnums now but after reading up a bit I think the 260 is easier on the shoulder and wallet and just as effective if not more. Why use 65 - 70 grains of powder when 40 - 45 will do the same thing. Some of the 6mm cartridges are interesting but the cost of custom dies makes them out of the question.

I figure barrel, cases, dies, bullets etc will only set me back 600 or so with the 260. I have a .473 bolt face all set up
 
Thanks Mike, that's a great site. had already read a couple of their articles but being the OCD SOB that I am I always over shop and like to get as much info as I can before plopping down the cash. Don't laugh but I think the deciding factor of the three cartridges mentioned in that article is that I can buy a Lee collet necksizer for the 260.

One other thing, I assume that these will feed from a .308 Win magazine?
 
A friend of mine has a 260 that I've shot out to 500yds, and it was crazy accurate. I have no doubt that it could easily do 1000yds. It was very pleasant to shoot.
 
after some more reading on the cartridge I have decided this will definitely be my next barrel. Probably April since everyone and their brother seems to be sold out on the Remington brass. That will also give me a bit more time to build my toy account up a bit more.
 
I'm going with the 6XC.

Brass can be formed from 22-250Rem.

Amazing BC's with the long match bullets. Still doing 1500fps at 1000.

Just thought you might have over looked it.

The 260Rem is a good choice as well.

I have been dreaming of a long range rifle, and after a lot of reading, the .260 seems to be where its at. Have you done any reading on the .260 AI? I would love to hear what you end up with, and how it treats you.
 
Looked at the 6XC, dies run 150 and up for a set. Lee dies at 30 available for the 260. I get sub .25 groups in my 204 and .5 groups with my 308 using Lees and I love the Lee collet necksizer. If the 6XC had any substantial benefit over the 260 I would go with it but I cant see enough of advantage fior the extra expense and bother of forming the cases

On the 260 AI, you can use the Lee neck sizer and I would go with it but I hate fireforming cases. An article on fireforming the 260 AI

once again is the advantage really worth the extra effort for someone of my skill level ? This is just a fun way to spend a coupel of days a week for me and I don't see myself winning any national trophies anytime in the near future. If I can place in the top 2 or 3 at my local club I would be happy, anything more would be icing on the cake.
 
I went .243 Win with a fast 1:7 barrel for my long range rifle. .260 is a good choice as well, and was on my short list along with the Creedmoor. I decided on the .243 because of laziness and not wanting to add a new cartridge to the bench. Reading an article over on 6mm BR on the .243 Win helped as well.
 
I was also thinking tight twist 243Win, but went with the XC for less recoil.

And I just gotta have something no one else around here has:)

The 6.5s and 6s are a real sweet spot for LR shooting. .260/.243 have some great benefits. Good velocities out of a 26" barrel, brass manufacturers for both range from cheap to expensive. So whether you wan to shoot with lapua or remington brass go for it. Bullet selection is great, if your considering hunting the .260 might be more appealing. .243 will have less recoil, hell pretty much no recoil. I mean yes it has recoil but the .243 is so mild it's unreal.

Mrawesome the 6XC is an excellent round i've considered one myself, but changed my mind to a 6.5x47L because i'll be hunting with it as well. I eventually will have on though as a dedicated 6mm gun.

PGS over at the hide has one and he has some outstanding groups with it.

Went through the same thought process as you... chose a Cooper 54 Varmint in 260 Remington. Unbelievably accurate!!
