.260 remington, build or buy?

Hey all. Have a long term project to either build or buy a .260 rem. Primary purpose would be f class and long range shooting. I have good experience at all the ranges I would shoot this new rifle.

My choices are:
build one from a Remington 700 .308 action
Buy a production rifle in .260, probably savage 12.

Bottom line this will be a project for accuracy. Will spend more for better parts and glass.

Thoughts?

Personally, I would build one off of a Savage action - simply because I'm cheap and I could do the barrel swap myself and save the price of having a gunsmith do it.

I own 2 .260's (both Remington). I love the caliber but if I had to do it all over again I'd probably go 7mm-08 instead. I don't shoot long-range benchrest so the extra BC of the 6.5mm bullet is kind of wasted on me.

It's hard to beat the Remington action. By building you have an almost unlimited choice of barrel, stock trigger, etc. It would be "YOUR" rifle.

However you do it, I would build it around that Savage BR action. I think that thing ought to be called a "cheater" action. It has the components for near br type accuracy for lots cheaper.

You couldn't go wrong putting a Krieger barrel on that in a custom stock! I think I would use a 28" tube with a heavy taper.

Sorry....just thinking out loud!

I'd build, but on a custom action M700 clone. Some the clone actions use a floating bolt head like Savage, but you get more stock options since it has the dimensions of a M700. Best of both worlds IMO.

If money is no problem, I would build one. By bulding you get features that you can't buy on a factory produced rifle. Features like a hand lapped match grade barrel and bolt lugs, a trued up bolt face and the choice of a stock the fits your needs. You have a choice of barrel length and chamber dimensions also.
