.25ACP Ammunition Test

Kentucky Rifle

Someone here, I don't remember who, stated that he was out shooting his .25 one day and found an old Frisbee which he used as a target. He was using the new Winchester "expanding point" .25ACP ammo. Anyway, when he shot the Frisbee, the bullet bounced back and hit him in the chest. I don't think he was hurt, just surprised. I finally found an old Frisbee, which I used as a target for my Beretta Jetfire .25ACP. I was using Fiocchi 50gr. FMJ. I'm happy to report that every round punched through the Frisbee. My Winchester expanding point ammo has been relegated to target practice.

I know of a person that got hit in the kneecap with a FMJ .25 ACP only to have it bounce off and drop on the chair next to him. Left a welt on the knee, nothing more. The perpetrator who shot him was never caught...

buddy of mine had a .25acp bout 10 years ago, so I can't tell you what he was shooting or the make of gun. I had one of those .22short derringers-they sell them in presentation boxes and the derringer opens by flipping the barrel down.

I had a box of National Goegraphic magazines...duplicates of ones from my collection. We set the box up so we faced the short end...as if shooting the magazines thru the front. He fired from maybe 8ft. I did the same. His .25 made it about halfway thru a single mag after going thru the cardboard. My .22short went thru 3 and lodged in the 4th.

I shot my Jetfire 950 (.25ACP) into a 1500 page phone-book and it went completely through it. I was using Hornady XTP 35 grain hollowpoints. I also shot that same round through an old literature book (thicker pages) and it went through 800 pages into the the book and stopped fully expanded. The initial reason I chose Hornady over the Winchester Expanding Point, and Speer GD was because the Hornady was the ONLY round to expand in a test that I read about in G&A and the fastest round as well. I've shot nearly 500 rounds of Hornady XTP's through my Jetfire, and it's been 100% reliable.

It sure-as-heck shouldn't bounce off frisbies,
Ben

LOL - Yeah - that was me.
Having bullets bounce off your chest is a very memorable thing. This has happened more than once.
That .25 was a surprise and a half.

The Jetfire barrel may be a little longer than the barrel of an ASTRA CUB .25 - or you have a hotter load.

I can't find Hornady XTP's ANYWHERE.
I'll keep looking. The Fiocchi FMJ works well, but for serious back-up I use MagSafes.

George: I thought that was you! :)

I have an old Astra 25acp. I have always wondered about people that claim that the 25 has such a lack of penetration and I'm forced to beleive that many of them have never shot the 25 caliber and are just repeating things that some other inexperienced person told them. I don't believe that the 25 is blessed with an abundance of power, but I do know that my pistol will penetrate a 2x4 quite nicely. I also shot into catalogs and oak logs and found the results to be adequite and it pretty much makes bogus out of the claims that they will bounce off a good pair of Levi's. I feel where a lot of the claims of it's lack of penetration have come from are incidents involving extreme range and hollowpoint ammuniton. I view the 25 caliber to be a poor choice for personal defense, but not totally anemic. If it needs to be used it should be at very close range and hardball should always be used to ensure adequite penetration which is the only thing this small round has going for it.

The place I used to get them from stopped carrying them because people don't realize how good some og the Hornady ammo is for self defense... so nobody buys it. I found a new place vrom a bunch of shooting buddies in GA called Adventure Outdoors. They carry it, but cost about $1.40 more than Pannel's Firearms did.

Alex - Let me fill you in on the procedure when I got that bounce. The magazine was loaded with some Winchester Expanding Point loads. The one with the little BB in the nose I believe (this was back in 1996 or 7.
I leaned the frisbee up against the base of a large Elm tree... backed up about 10 steps.
Aimed and fired.
The first shot bounced back to hit me square in my chest.

This is the truth - the whole truth - and nothing but the truth.

Plus side - That .25 slug hit the frisbee right dead center - right where I aimed.
