25 rimfire pump rifle

My grandfather owned a Remington pump rifle in 25 rimfire. My father inherited it upon his death and it will come to me upon his passing.

I never fired it. Dad says it was outstanding on coyotes.

Does anyone have information about the round and availability of ammo.

There were several 25 RF cartridges. Long, short, and 25 Stevens long. The Stevens was the most powerfull. I do not know which one you have. You will be lucky to find any ammo other than collector single cartridges which are expensive. I for one would like to see a "heavy" rimfire available again.

The most likely candidate is the .25 Stevens. Remington apparently made a considerable number of rifles in that caliber, more than they made in .25 Stevens short.

Ammo is very tough to come by in shootable quantities.

Thanks for the help. It is as I figured. It will have to join my great grandfathers cut down musket as a wall hanger.

As Mike said, 25 rimfire ammo is scarce and pretty much limited to collectors any more.

If you get a hankering to go shoot your grandfathers old Remington, you would have to get the bore lined or rebarrel the rifle, either of which would cost more than the gun is worth. Of course that doesn't stop people from doing it, just be prepared.

Relining the barrel might not be such a big deal, as compared to relocating firing pin and other cartridge handling mechanisms. I'd be willing to say that if it was a bolt, it would be inexpensive and worth it, but being a pump makes it a deal breaker.

I'd have suggested going with .22 magnum if possible, so that case length would at least come closer to matcing.

Are you sure that was a 25 rimfire? Remingtom made a Model 25 slide action rifle chambered in 25-20 and 32-20. A desirable gun now for slide guys. And the Models 14 and 141 were chambered in the Remington 25 CF round back in the day.

Or it could have beem a Marlin pump. I think Marlin chambered the 25 RF in a pump.
