25-222 Copperhead.

Does anyone have experience loading this round?

My friend gave me his gun and dies to work him up a load for this gun a 25-222 Copperhead. It's a neat little round for small kids to start deer hunting with. No recoil. 222 casing neck expanded for a 25 caliber bullet to make it legal to hunt big game in Va. No recoil what so ever so its great for his 5 year old son.

I brought the gun and dies home. Prepped some brass and started to full length size the brass. I set up my die and worked a piece of brass through the press. As soon as I saw the sized brass I knew something wasn't right. It only sized about 1/4 the way down the neck of the grass and that was it.

The dies are made by Redding. I may have to call them tomorrow and make sure they made and sent him the right dies.
 
Are you sure he didn't get set for 25x222mag. They made Copperhead Mag based on 222mag also Improved on same case.

W/o measuring, I'd say that is a distinct possibility.

You're saying the neck was expanded to 25 but only partially resized?
Do you have a .223 case to run through the sizer?

Someone is on to something. I looked at the dies one says 25-222mag ST 9F and the other says 25-308 FL and the of coarse the seating die.

???
 
Contacted Midway and Redding and it is the wrong die. Like y'all mentioned this die is based off of the 222 Rem Mag and not the 222 Rem.

The dies did work for me to load up some rounds today to test some rounds. I took it from a 2.25" group at 100 yards to a sub 1moa group at 100 yards. It will Aug by the time they get me the right die here.

Oh it is? I killed my first deer when I was 5 years old. He killed a buck and a doe on youth weekend last year at age 4 and killed his first spring gobbler this spring at age 4 with a .410 and TSS loads.

The fact that some do it doesn't change what I said in any way.
 
Your opinion of the irrelevant subject you brought up had no place here. This thread was about reloading for a 25-222 copperhead not about what age do you think is a good age to take a kid hunting was it not? Did I ask you for your opinion of weather or not you thought a 4-5 year old child was mature enough to take hunting? No I didn't. But you must have felt it was very important for you stick your 2 cents in about something that has nothing to do with reloading for a 25-222 copperhead. Not all 4-5 year old children are mature enough to go hunting at that age but when that's all they can think about and work vigilantly with them preparing for success in the field the yes they are mature enough. I don't care for people like you. This is American the land of the free and home of the brave. Men and woman have died for my right to take my child hunting when ever I want to. I'll take my child hunting when ever I want to take my child hunting. I am the judge if my child is or isn't mature enough to go hunting. I don't have time for narrow minded people like you. Move along and off my thread. If you don't have anything to offer about reloading for a 25-222 copperhead have yourself a fine and dandy rest of your day.

You should be able to base some of your load data on .25-45 Sharps, if you have difficulty coming up with loads on your own.
 
About 20 yrs ago I bought a 25/222, so designated on barrel stamp, on a Rem
722 at auction- estate sale. Never shot it as I didn't have dies, put 222 barrel on
gun and lived happily ever after. Would have liked to have shot it but dies from
RCBS cost about 3 times what I paid for gun. Nobody else bid on it. Same sale
I got a 22/357 Ackley Jet, which I did shoot. Seems the old guy who passed
was a 25 freak.
 
I hope you keep us posted after the dies are received.

My Dad had one of these years ago, and I remember shooting it when I was a pup.

Keep up the good work with the young 'un.

My Dad took me along with most fishing trips and hunting excursions since I was in diapers.

Now, he is too old to do either, but the memories will last as long as we do.

I shot my first 12 ga. SxS when I was 5. Knocked me on my butt, but I did it again.
 
The 25COPPERHEAD was designed by John Wootters. There is tested data for same in an early HANDLOADER MAGAZINE.
And so it goes...
 
I have John Wootters article on the 25 Copperhead it was in Handloader #18, 1969. What was interesting he cast bullets for it
 
Results

I found a load with no problem. I just looked the heaviest bullet and load for a .222 Rem and then just dropped back 1 grain of powder on the charge since I'm loading a 75 gr bullet and the load data was for a 50 grain bullet.

It worked out just fine. I actually had some left over old cases that was a compressed load and didn't see the need for all of that.

I loaded 19.5 grains of 4198 and here are the results.



 
No I don't know what article you're talking about. I haven't read anything. I just pulled the bullet of one of the remaining loads that was with the gun and it had 21.5 grains of 4198 and it was a compressed load and I just didn't think that was how I wanted to load it being the max load for a 50 grain bullet in 222 was 20.5. I just backed it off 1 grain and tried it and it worked.

I didn't need any help with the load I started the thread asking about the dies I had. The load wasn't the problem for me.
 
We did get ahold of Redding and these are the wrong dies and they are sending me the right dies. These dies are based off of a .222 Rem mag. We need the set that's based of a .222 Rem.
