.25-06 question

Hey guys, went to a whitetails unlimited banquet last night. I won a savage axis in 25-06. Don't have much knowledge of this gun or round. Any info or opinions would be great! Thank you!

I've used a 257 Roberts to kill a heck of a lot of deer and antilope. Its quite effective. The 25-06 is a bit faster, I think you will be quite pleased with it.

Congratulations on your win. I like my 25/06 a lot, and it is great for deer, antelope and like sized animals.
Also a good varmint gun.

Great caliber for whitetail and similar sized thin-skinned game. Great rifle too, count yourself lucky. I'd spend a little more than 100 bucks on some optics but that's just me. $200-$400 optics should do you nicely.

I'm not fond of the Axis, but free is well free! I love my .25-06 and I'm sure you will like this one. I'd spend a little more than $100 scope because you need at least a 12 power in my opinion to use a .25-06 to its potential.

While I'm sure that Axis will perform well, I just can't warm up to them. They are the budget line that Savage produces. There really aren't any aftermarket parts for them as far as stocks and good triggers. Plus the barrels are a little short for the .25-06 cartridge IMO.

Man please free 25-06 & rifle dont leave much room to complain,Great deer round fast low recoil sounds like a great deal to Me,CONGRATS & enjoy.

I used to have a Ruger 77 in that caliber. It is a great flat shooting cartrige for up to deer sized game. If you handload it's a 30:06 case necked down to .25 cal.

It's a good long range cartrige with the heavier bullets with a high BC.

The lighter bullets are very fast, and makes a good varmint gun.

Good bolt action capable of better than MOA accuracy for three shots in a light barrel. Heavy barrels will shoot 5 or more into less than MOA.

It's not a hard kicker, but recoil is noticeable. Less than a 270 or ought 6.

I have an older Ruger M77 Mark II in 25-06. I love it. It's a flat shooting long range game getter. BTW, I elk hunt with mine and it works just fine with the right load.

Nice prize! Load it with RL 22 and a 117 grain Hornady or Sierra, and put a good scope on it. It will shoot a LOOONG way out there with proper practice.

That caliber is on my to get list. I think it would be a good varmint/ medium sized game cartridge. Very fast, and if in the right spot could even probably take an elk.
