Does anyone get excited about this caliber?

What conditions do you hunt in?

What game do you use it for?

What game/hunting conditions do you consider it to be inadequate for?

Thanks!!

:)

I don't know that "excited" is the right word, but I think it's a great caliber and I had fun with mine while I had it. Wish I had it back!

What game do you use it for?

Mine was a Ruger M77V (heavy bbl) that I bought to use on coyotes. Took it deer hunting once (once!) and swore never again to pack a varmint bbl around on deer hunt. (Got my deer, though).

What game/hunting conditions do you consider it to be inadequate for?

It's versatile in that you can load 75 gr bullets at 3600 fps for long range/small game, or go to the 120 gr loadings for deer size critters. I think the .25 is, at maximum, a deer/antelope caliber. While you could certainly kill elk with it, there are better calibers for such a large animal.

Thanks!!

I positively love mine! One thing to rmemeber is that each rifle is a law unto itself..........some great out of the box, some not so great. I got a great one ............... it helps the love affair.

I think it is a great caliber. I used it mostly for Rock Chucks, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it on Deer or Antelope.

I have a Rem 700 BDL. Bought a 25-06 just to have one. Out of the box using Federal 100 grain factory load, I had three shots touching each other at 100 yards. For whitetails its just as good as a 270 with a little less recoil. Any bigger game I would go with 270 or 30-06.

I don't have a 25-06 but I do have the .257 Weatherby---With 100 gn factory loads, I get groups with all shots touching. Using my buddy's chono---we clocked that load at 3700 fps. Kind of nice just to point and shoot. With the heavier loads I wouldn't hesitate to use it on just about anything.

A friend of mine hit a decent size pig (250-300lbs) with a 300 H & H and it charged. His son immediately shot it with his 25-06 and put it down. I was certainly surprised, and I personally wouldn't take a 25-06 pig hunting, but it goes to show that the caliber can perform pretty impressively if you place your shot correctly.

Hmmm...things have changed around here since last fall!

My opinion is that the .25-06 is one of the best choices of all for a single caliber to do it all---or nearly all. I wouldn't use it on elk or bear, but that's what the .35 Whelen is for.

Belts? We don't need no stinking belts!

Me dad-in-law has offered a choice of several Mauser actions he has laying about and a gorgeous stock blank to build a completely custom rifle. I have decided that it will be a .25-06 as it is the do all caliber for North America. Problem with custom guns is the damn wait.
