25-06 into a 257 WM

i am thinking of buying a ruger #1 in 25-06, but i want to rechamber it for 257 weatherby. is this possible? feasible?
economical?
i already shoot a 257 WM Mk V and would like a single shot to match. what would be the minimum BBL lenghth that would get the full potential of this round?
thanks for any help you can give.

It might be easier to buy a #1 in .270 Weatherby and then have it rebarreled to .257----That way the action would already be set up for the cartridge as they both use the same cartridge case. I have a .257 Weatherby SLS that will shoot the 100gn Weatherby loads at 3700 fps and gives damn near one-hole groups. My buddy has a .270 Weatherby built on a Remington action that is accurate and flat shooting. I guess what I'm trying to say is to buy the #1 in .270 Weatherby----and try it out---you might feel like you won't want to change a thing---You will have one heck of a rifle and it will be a lot cheaper than what you're talking about doing. Also all the Weatherby rounds need pretty much need a 26" barrel to get the full potential out of them.

I must be missing something. Why couldn't he just get the rifle rechambered to .257 W ? As bore diameter is the same, haveing to adjust the extractor should be the only action modification.

I doubt if I will succeed in my attempt to talk you out of 257 Weatherby but here goes. I have never seen any evidence that on average the 257 is more accurate than the 25-06. In fact I read an article in Outdoor Life several years ago about South Carolina beanfield shooting where a Savage 25-06 handily outshot a MarkV 257 Weatherby. 257 does offer a ballistic advantage over 25-06, but not really that significant a one. Can you really ever see yourself in a situation where you would say to yourself that the difference between the two would be the deciding factor in whether to take the shot? 257 uses quite a bit more powder than 25-06 and would certainly erode the throat faster. 257 brass and factory ammo is also quite a bit more expensive. I have a Rem 700 BDL in 25-06 that out of the box has shot 1/2" 100 yard groups with Federal ammo, 100 grain Nosler load. Good luck and have fun with whichever you choose.

Sorry, I didn't read your post completely before I posted. Didn't realize you already had one 257 Weatherby. My goof.

Giz I'm not positive on how the #1 is set up----but wouldn't the difference in the size of the case heads make it easier to start with an action that is already set up for magnum cartridges?

I have never had a #1 rechambered, but it has to be cheaper than rebarreling. Being a single shot, looks to me like a simple reduction on the extractor (to fit the greater case head) would be the only action work needed. Rebarreling is about a $400 dollar (plus) option.

Well, truly getting the best out of a Ruger pretty much demands rebarreling, in my experience.

Ruger's barrels are, well, production barrels, and of the big Four (Savage, Remington, Winchester, and Ruger), I've always found them to be the most accuracy challenged.

I saw a Ruger No. 1 in .218 Bee yesterday.

Oh man, I was SOOOOOOO tempted...

I would think a Ruger No. 1 in 7 Rem mag would eb the way to go if you just want to rebarrel.

I think you might be happier with a TC Encore Rifle though. The Encore will usually/often shoot MOA from the factory...while No. 1's usually take a lot of work to get to that level because of their design.

The other thing about the Encore approach is that all you would have to do to switch it to 257 Weatherby would be to buy a barrel in that caliber from SSK indusdries or some such company.

And you could keep or sell original barrel for the Encore.

the thing was, i had an opportunity to buy one at $380.
i passed on the offer so now i probably will get the TC and a custom stock and BBL from http://www.bullberry.com

i really think people underestimate the weatherby sub 30 cal's.
they are so fast and flat and they kill like the hand of GOD.
