25-06 barrel length??

Ok ok...this has probably been discussed before but....

Looking at another Marlin (bought XS7 in .243 recently)....chambered for the 25-06. Now I know the the '06 will perform it's best in 24", MAYBE even 26" barrel.....but soooo many manufacturers just stick the standard sporter 22" tube on the 25-06 (except maybe Weatherby, H and R....).

I'm not concerned with losing a bit of velocity (50-70 FPS MV?)...I just don't want the muzzle blast to be crazy loud. Who has experience with a 22" 25-06? Is is that much louder than a 22" .243 Win?

A 25-06 is probably the only non-magnum round that will actually benefit from a 24" barrel. While not a magnum in name, it is in performance.
 
Thanks for all the replies! I think I'll steer AWAY from the 22" 25-06...it does kinda make me wonder why there aren't more factory options in the 24".

It is a custom rifle that I had built. It started out as a Zastava standard long action .473 bolt face with set triggers. I had High Tech Customs here in Colorado Springs blue print the action and install a Lilja stainless steel 26" heavy magnum contour 1:10 twist barrel with recessed target crown. He then sent it off to have the barreled action coated in KG Gun Kote semi-gloss black.

I then stocked it in an old Whitworth Mauser stock. The nice exhibition grade Carlo Walnut stock I had originally purchased for it had some grain run out and broke in two. I had a new recoil pad installed by another local smith but I did the refinish work on the stock, thinking of sending it off to be checkered now.

I topped it off with a Bushnell Elite 4-16X40 AO scope that was a pawn shop find. It started out with a Leupold 4-12X40 AO VXII rifle scope but I decided that I wanted a little more top end out of the scope. I can't say enough good things about either scope. I've only had the rifle for two hunting seasons but it has already taken a couple of coyotes, pronghorn doe, and a mule deer buck.

I've got a slow barrel as the 120 grain Sierra HPBT that I've been shooting barely gets over 2900 fps. That doesn't mean that I'm not able to reach out there and touch something still with this rifle. I've tried all the slow powders and RL-19 and 22 seem to work the best with H4831 SC coming in a close third.
 
Weatherby Vanguards come with 24" barrels in 25-06. New ones were selling for $299.99 last month at my local sporting goods store.
 
so do most of you think I would be better off with the H and R Ultra (laminate) 26" over the XL7 22"? Again.....report/muzzle blast being the concern....

If muzzle blast is a concern, then yes you would notice a difference. As stated before, 25-06 is one of the calibers that really does benefit both in velocity and in shootability from having a longer barrel.
 
Depends, do you want a repeater or a single shot. Plus most H&R rifles aren't out of the box shooters. It takes about 200 rounds give or take to break in the H&R rifles. After that many rounds the trigger smooths out and so does the barrel and you will have a decent shooter. The XL7's have a far better trigger from what I've found. Another thing about the H&R is the muzzle will not be any farther away since you lack about 4" of receiver so the report and blast will be similar to the 22" barrel.

Are you committed to the .25-06? There are plenty of cartridges out there that can do nearly the same thing tht will work in shorter barrels. The .243 Win is one that come to mind.

still...you're looking at a 26" vs a 22" barrel here, right? I mean would the H and R not be "taming" the blast a tad...regardless of the distance the muzzle is from the shooter?

committed to 25-06? well...I have two .243s (love the cartridge) and some other short actions...to be honest I've just always thought that the 25-06 was a pretty darn neat cartridge. also...I want another Marlin X7....this one in CAMO....and the '06 interests me the most out of the available chamberings. Can you compare blast of 22" 243 and 22" 25-06??
 
Who makes a 22 inch 2506. i dont remember seeing any made. But if they were i wouldnt be to upset if i owned one. You see 270s with barrels as short as 18 inch and most come standard with 22 and theres not a big differnce in overbore between those two. Youd probably loose a 100 fps at the most.

It doesn't matter if it is a longer barrel if the muzzle isn't any farther away from the shooters ears. The farther away the the barrel is from the shooter the less report you will hear. In regular rifles like we are talking about is being directed straight forward.

It is amazing how much difference there is between a 16" barrel and 20" barrel when shooting AR style rifle, however you put a 20" barrel into a bull-pup style rifle and the report is louder than the 16" M4 carbine. Of course all these rifles have a flash suppressor and are louder than most rifles unless your rifles have a muzzle brake.

Well I'm not going to talk you out of a cartridge you want. I enjoy my .25-06 as well and wouldn't want to get rid of it. It is a great cartridge for anything deer sized and smaller. Any cartridge that burns less powder will create less report.

Lloyd, I'm pretty sure that Savage and Marlin offer bolt actions with 22" barrels.
