243 VS 308

Hey guy's! I'm looking at the Savage Axis in one of those calibers.. I can't decide! I'm mainly going to target shoot and hunt with it. I may do a lil long range which isn't really long range (150-200 yards) Which do you think would be a better choice? I would prefer low recoil also..

Hope you can help! -Parker

for low recoil your best bet is the .243 i own both calibers rifles and honestly i was surprised in the difference between the two. The 308 kicks like a mule which i was very surprised about. and the .243 is very easy to handle especially if you are going to be target shooting. hope this helps and good luck

Another for 243. It's quite capable for targets are true long range, too (with the right twist and bullet).

First off, I KNOW this wasn't one of the calibers listed, but..

Why not go with the .260 Remington? It's based on the same case (.308) and is about dead in the middle between the two.
Recoil isn't all that bad, and I think it would win the "long range" part of it, hands down. To me, it's a significantly better cartridge than the .243, and probably as good a deer-killer as the .308, with less recoil.

I'm not sure the Savage comes in that caliber, but to me, it's the most logical choice, if you're deciding between the .308 and the .243.

Unless you plan on heading up North to hunt bigger game, I say .243. It should handle any of the critters in Florida, and I see no reason to take the extra recoil if you don't need the extra oomph.

I'm going to disagree with the .243 crowd. Yes, I know it is perfectly capable of killing our Fl deer and hogs. However, a .308 is a better choice. The reason for this is that our thick woods can make tracking a wounded animal VERY difficult. The faster that animal drops, the better chance you have of recovering it. In that respect, 150 or 165 grn bullets do a much better job than those light pills the .243 is throwing.

I'm not a .243 fan myself. It's a marginal barrel burner and only a 6mm bullet. It gets its good reputation from its speed, not its "oomph".

That being said, there is a lot between .243 and .308. Any reason you're limited to those choices?

Well... if we're going to open up that can of worms, I vote for the 6.5 GRENDEL :D
(It does everything to include turning your bacon)

For hunting in southern woods, ease of shooting (low recoil), ammo availability, accuracy, flat trajectory and shear fun, you cannot go wrong with a .243 Win. Deer, hogs, yotes, varmints, paper, and about anything else you could want, it'll do it. Though I'd save a little bit more money and get a better rifle than the Axix/Edge product.

Or you could get the best of both worlds and look at the 7mm08.

All things considered, it's hard to beat the 243. Low recoil, ammo everywhere, guns everywhere, enough power for anything up to and including elk and down to prairie dogs.

Sure, there are some more esoteric arguments for other cartridges (I'm a BIG fan of 7mm-08) but, in reality, the venerable 243 will do everything you ask of it.

the 243 will get the job done.................just.
If your house is built to code, then it is minimum.
Go with the 308 and you can hunt almost anything.

The .243 would work just fine...

But I would go with the .308

- Cheaper too shoot (NATO)
- Just as versatile
- ***** cat recoil
- More energy

another vote for 243. 308 is a great round but 243 will still take most game anyone in the us is likely to hunt. it is great for medium game and excellent for varmints/predators. 308 is better for elk and brown bears but IMHO it is a bit overkill for anything smaller...I was raised to save as much meat as possible so if you can do the job with a 223 it is considered wasteful to use a 30 cal on that that animal.

Thanks for all the responses guys!! Wasn't expecting so many in such a short time!! Look's like I need to mow a few more yards and I will have enough $$ for it!! (I'm 14)
I narrowed it down to these 2 because I don't own a gun in either caliber.. Thanks again guy's!! One more question, Budsgunshop good prices or could I find cheaper??

Thanks,Parker

I have both. If I'm hunting 150-200 yards I'd probably go with the .243 with a 100 grain bullet. I harvested a deer a few years ago at 120 yards with that combo. I purchased the ammo (Core Lokt) off the shelf. I found the deer about 5 yards inside the woods.

.308 kicks like a mule? With a sporter barrer perhaps. I shoot a bull barrel so recoil isn't an issue.

Bud's is one of the good ones, but I would also recommend trying to find it local as well, as long as it's not insanely more than online prices... Help the little guys out, you know?
