.243 Factory Ammo Suggestions

The woman I love (and hope to marry) recently bought me a Remington 700 BDL Custome Deluxe in .243 as a belated birthday gift. Twist is 1:10 (I assume that's standard?) I've got it topped with a Leupold VariX-II 3X9, and it's a handy little setup.

So far, after approx. 50 rounds of mixed Winchester Powerpoint, Remington Core-Lokt, and federal GameKing, all 100gr., the rifle seems to like the Winchesters best. 1"-2" groups at 100yds vs. 3"-5".

For medium game (S. Texas whitetail, exotic sheep, etc.)under 200yds, does anyone have other factory load recommendations I should consider, e.g. Hornady? I will reload eventually, but I'm not set up for it now.

Thanks,

SA Scott

I ran short of handloads for my .243, one time. Grabbed a box of Federal, loaded with the Sierra 85-grain HPBT. They shot as good a group as my handloads with the same bullet.

I've taken about 20 deer with that load...

I have had good luck with Winchester PowerPoints (non-moly) in my Savage 11FC .243. They do about 1" consistently. Remington CoreLokt's were about 1.5". Federals shot 2" (partition hunting bullet). I hand load with Hornady 100 gr SP now and get about 5/8" if I don't pull it.

Thanks for the feedback!

Took 3 Corsican-Barbado cross sheep this weekend (ranch management, no excitement) a ewe and two lambs. Shooting the 100gr. Power-Points, the ewe was a drop-stop at about 50yds, and the lambs took a few steps before falling. Clean pass-through penetration, probably a bit too much bullet.

I'm really getting to like this rifle/caliber combo...:)

Good luck with finding the best load. You might check on the availability of Remington Premier loads in .243. I've had excellent results with these in .260 and 7mm-08 and expect the .243s would be just as consistent -- if they are available.

And by the way, marry that woman!
