240 wby

Any fans here? I see wby has it listed as a chambering for the vanguard now. Anyone seen any at dealers yet? I kind of interested in trying it as its one mag round ive never fooled with. Im not looking for a bunch of negitives or guys telling me to make up a 6-06 or that brass is expensive. i know all of the negetives. Im looking for guys that have actually shot stuff with it and what they thought of it and any heads up as to where i can pick one up.

An older guy I used to work for thought the 240 was the top of the line for deer/coyote hunting. He had plenty of money to work with and had his ammo custom loaded using the old style Hornady 87 grain SP with the coke bottle shaped core. He shot quite a bit and was a pretty decent shot. He bragged considerable about the number of animals he'd killed at 400+ yards but I didn't see any of them. Considering I saw your post about the 700 CDL 257 Wby, I'd say that is a better long range deer/coyote round than the 240 Wby. The other downside of the Vanguard as you know is the 24" barrel compared to the standard Wby 26". My 257 Vanguard with 110's is marginally faster than my Savage 25/06 with 100's

I fired one in a MK-V many years ago. Excellent for long shots on varmits. Beautiful rifle too. I have to admit that I have always been in love with the MK-V's.

A guy in our club shoots a 240wby in a mark v. He's a fourth generation gun smith and I love his description of the rifle. "It's the last rifle you'll ever buy." He told me with a smile on his face. I also love his description of the round. "A lightning strike would not kill them as quickly." Well, I haven't heard of him shooting a white tail twice, and I've never had to help him track a thing so I'm inclined to agree with him.

That being said, my next rifle will be a 257 wby or 270 wby. They will do just as well with a little more recoil and report.

After rereading your post, I didn't realize that weatherby was making the vanguard in a 240 wby now. Whoa! I may have to jump on one of those.
