22LR to 22WMR?

I have a Stevens 22/410, is it possible to have the 22 LR reamed out to a mag? Would it not be cost effective? I don't know anything about rechambering/reaming so maybe I'm way off base and don't know it. Some enlightenment is in order. Thanks for your help.

Besides having the chamber opened up you would need to have the bore opened up, IIRC, the .22 WMR uses a larger bore diameter than the .22LR.

The two cartridges may have different bore specifications but both are fired from the same barrels. For example the ruger handguns with interchangable cylinders for 22 rimfire and 22 magnum rimfire. The specifications must be very close if they are different at all.:)

Thought I read somewhere

that .22lr was .219...WMR was .224...Gun mag article on rimfires, but I might be wrong..Still, as pointed out, probably OK

Good idea for a lot more punch

Cases are much longer, so, as I understand it, your chamber would have to be lengthened to accomodate the longer cartridge, so that the bullet would engage the rifling properly.

Also, since the barrel diameters are .001" or more different, the best alternative might be to have a nice barrel from a well-known maker chambered, installed and headspaced for .22 WMR.

I think the idea of a .410/.22 WMR is a good one. Good luck.

Regards.

The tolerances for the barrels are such that a barrel that is within manufacrurer's specs may well be just right for the other cartridge. Good idea to get your barrel checked for size first.

Rate of twist would also be a factor.

I'm not sure if the barrels can be seperated easily. They appear to be joined together. The gun is a single shot, break open model. I know the mag is longer and I thought that would be the only difference, that is why I ask you guys, cause I aint as smart as I thunk I r, I reckon.

Sam is usually right

If so, all you may need is a chamber lengthening. (Edit: I should have said reaming; see below.) A guy who should be able and willing to help you out with advice and excellent work is Randy at

He may be able to rechamber one barrel without separating them. Again, good luck.

The chamber will have to be opened up too. Different diameter shell casings. The 22 WRM uses a conventional bullet while the .22 LR uses a heeled bullet that is the same diameter as the case.
