22lr revolver in CA

I started looking for a new 22lr revolver recently. Being in CA, the 1st place I looked was on our approved list. Of the ones I saw, only the S&W 10-shot 617 w/ 4" barrel appealed to me.
My question...is it worth the $500 entry fee?

Most any decent revolver is around $500 these days in CA. When I bought my Model 17 and 18's years ago they were as pricey or a bit more than a K frame .357 as I recall. A lot of people will say that it is "only a .22 so why spend the money". My way of thinking is that it will be shot as much and probably more than any other revolver one has so why not enjoy life and get a decent one. The 18 I have has been tuned and customized just like my centerfires. I have not regretted it in the least. One route to go if $500 seems a bit pricey is to try and find a used one for less on consignment or from a private party. Sometimes one gets lucky as I got a 686 for a private party in L.A. off of Guns America.

The Ruger isn't much less in expence, but holds only 6 rounds. I believe Ruger also has a single action revo on the list, but I am looking for something I can shoot DA.

Single Action & CA approved list

Don't forget that most single action revolvers don't appear on the CA approved list, but they are legal. If you want to consider SA, it will open up the window to a lot of sub $300 options, even sub $200.

Ruger Bearcats and similar SA models can be purchased for around $300 to as low as $130 for Heritage Arms Rough Rider 22LR revolver. Can't vouch for the quality, but if you want to consider SA, there are lot of cheaper options.

You know, I was just looking on GunsAmerica.com under "Colt DAs, pre-1945" (checking out Police Positive Special 4"ers which are "on the list"). I happened to notice there were a bunch of Officer's Match Target models in .22LR, some dating to the 1920s and 1930s.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that old enough that "on the California list" isn't an issue any more?

Prices seemed fair in some cases. And the reputation of these is that they're ungodly accurate, it's the same frame and lockwork that later became the Python :). I've read at least one credible report somewhere on sixgunner.com claiming that these are the most accurate DA 22s ever made, period, end of discussion. And they'll take any Python grips.

If I wanted a DA .22LR, that would seem to be the ultimate. Price is in the same ballpark as that S&W, and I'll bet good money these are more accurate:

http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976104544.htm - this last is an oddball, set up with an SA trigger only, oversize hammer, possibly factory set up that way - but with the usual DA-type swing-out cylinder!?
