.22LR Long Range

I was thinking of trying some 500-600 yard shots with a .22. Anybody any ever tried it? What ammo would you use. I'm gonna use CCI Mini-Mag 36gr CPHP

I don't think it'd be too hard to zero in on a 500 yard target with a 22lr given enough ranging shots and you have sights that would adjust that high, because it's going to be a rainbow shot.

If you do the math, I think you'll see the problems with that idea.

Plugging in basic numbers into a ballistics program... A 36 gr projectile with a BC of 1.40 (just a guess here), a muzzle velocity of 1235 fps, zeroed at 200 yds will have a drop of 434 inches at 600 yards. You'd need a very tall and radically slopped scope base, or a crazy hold over... like 37 feet. "Rainbow" is a good word for it Microgunner.

If I did my math right, 434 inches over 600 yards is just over 1 degree. While "radical" compared to a normal sight rail, it's not like that would be difficult to machine if somebody was so inclined.

What's behind this 600 yard target? A berm isn't likely to be high enough to be completely safe if you're firing the gun like a tiny howitzer. Not making fun - trying to hold over like that doesn't sound very safe unless you own a whole lot of vacant land behind your target, or it's on the side of a mountain or something. Also, if you miss, with a tiny bullet like that, how are you going to figure out where you hit?

At what range will the bullet remain supersonic? You may have to start subsonic for accuracy and hold over even more.

I've shot at about 200 yards and it was interesting. With the rifle sighted at 50 it was dropping several more feet. You can hear the hit over a second after the shot. 5 or 600 yards would be pretty tough on a windy day. What would seem like a tiny gust of wind would move the bullet a couple feet to the side. But if the target was big enough you could get hits. Good luck.

Dustin - should have mentioned that at the few clubs I've been to that have a 600-yard range, none of them allow rimfire cartridges of any type - the absolute rule is centerfire only.

Just between you me and the neighbors dog I would ditch the 36 gr and go with a solid 40 gr bullet. It will leave slower but maintain its momentum a wee bit better and you might want to look at Win Super X or Eley Moving target ammo, RWS RS-50 would be another good one. I can't tell you about 600 yards but 200 and 300 yards with favorable winds they do good.

For my long range match shooting I have pretty much settled on Win Super X 40 gr solids as being a bit more consistent and easier to get then the others. That or my small supply of Aguila High velocity solids would be my choice. All of them are 40 gr solids and the Aguila is is higher velocity out of the gate. By the time they get past 100 yards all of them are down between 1100 to 950 fps

I might just buy a lot of different ammo and do some tests. Actually just ran out of 40gr solids yesterday so next time I'll pick some up

I tried this once but at only 200 yards. After a couple ranging shots (no wind) I was able to hit a big plate. I wouldn't bother trying it again especially at a longer distance. It was all guess work.

I am sure it can be done, you just need to find the bullet drop and weight of the round. What gun are you using? handgun or rifle? Although if you are trying to hit gel at that far, or metal target I doubt much it would go far into it.

Make a large target about 5x5 or bigger. I image the wind will drift it.

I admire the optimism here. Me, at that range and with a .22LR, I'd want a target at least the size of a deuce-and-a-half. What the heck - so long as you don't endanger anyone, go for it! Best you start out on a windless day, FWIW.

My son-in-law is an ace F-18 pilot and when they go to guns they shoot at really big-ass targets. Hits of more than 10% is doin' really good.

Looking forward to hearing back on your experience. Even if it's not perfect, at least you've got gumption.

I wasted a hundred rounds trying to see if I could hit a 3' plate at 550 with a SW 41, 7.5" barrel and 4x scope.

I couldn't see any hits in the dirt to range them in though, so it was all pure guess work. Maybe if I had a spotter with a good scope...

It was fun to try one time though, and if I'd have heard a "ping" from a hit at that range it definitely would have made my day. Don't think I'll be trying it again.

Heck, I think 150 yds is a long shot with 22LR. 100 is about all I might actually shoot and try to hit what I am aiming at with consistancy. 500 yds.... might do it for the fun of it, but it would never be anything serious.

There is a lady at my rifle & pistol club who does it,,,

There is a lady at my rifle & pistol club who has done it,,,
She has one of those Mini Sharps .22 rifles with that huge stock mounted sight.

The steel target at our 500 yard range is a three foot circle,,,
I saw her hit the target 2 out of 5 shots one calm day,,,
I think she actually channels Annie Oakley's mojo.

Me?,,,
I'm still trying to hit the ram silhouette target at 150 yards.
