.22lr in a .22 WMR bolt action rifle?

Reckon this is a rather common question, yet I couldn't find a similar thread: Is it safe to use .22lr in a .22 Magnum bolt action rifle? I know it does work, but does it have some adverse effect over the long term. Apart from that the question would be whether the .22 could develop its whole performance out of a magnum barrel, given the minimal difference in bullet diameter...

The two cartridges are significantly different, .22WMR is not just a lengthened .22 LR. Firing the latter in a firearm chambered for the former is not something anyone should call safe.

I tried it when young and foolish and found that .22LR cases often split, allowing high-pressure gasses and often brass particles to exit the action. It's definitely not safe!!!
