.22LR conversion kits vs. a 'true' .22?

Hi all,

I currently have a Remington .22LR rifle and Browning Buckmark pistol. I'm thinking of getting rid of the Remington rifle and replacing it with a conversion kit for my AR15.

What are your opinions of the conversion kits?

Never owned one myself, but don't care for them.

Why?

- Leading of the gas port.
- Bore dia and twist not optimal for .22lr.
- Chamber adapter is equivalent to over an inch of freebore before bullet engraves on rifling.
- Cost of kit and mags can purchase lots of 5.56 ammo and/or reloading components.
- Eliminates reason/excuse to buy more rifles:) .

Just my opinion of course.

I know that there's at least one company that makes complete .22RF uppers for ARs...that would eliminate leading up and possibly damaging your .223 uppers. The complete uppers have a VERY good reputation at AR15.com. I THINK they're made at Accuracy Speaks.

I have a GI .22 conversion kit. Its purpose was for training, and it is OK for that purpose, and is fairly accurate, but I don't think of it as a substitute for a good .22 rifle. I have not experienced any leading of the port or gas system, and I would think that any crud that did get into the port would be blown out by the first 5.56mm round fired afterwards.

(The .22 conversion, of course, is straight blowback and the gas system of the AR-15/M16 is not functional.)
