.22LR Ammo Suggestions for Model 41?

Faster Blaster

I will be picking up a like-new used S&W Model 41 in a couple days :D (need a permit to buy here in Michigan  ). I really want to take good care of this beauty and would appreciate any suggestions you guys have on ammo I should try out - specifically, practice ammo that is relatively CLEAN. Also, are high-velocity rounds bad for this gun?

I wouldn't say that high-velocity rounds are bad, but they're not what the Model 41 is all about.

Try CCI Standard Velocity. That should work very well. If you really want to spend centerfire kinds of money on rimfire ammo, go with Eley.

oooh...nice purchase, congrats.

I shoot Remington Target Standard Velocity through the one I compete with. It comes in a green and blue box. I've had very few problems with this ammo. (Maybe 10 malfunctions out of over 1,000 rounds.)

My 1970 Mod 41

Likes CCI standards, Federal Gold Medal standards, and Eley when I can afford.

M41 is easy to clean, so don't worry. Congrats on purchase of a superb match pistol!

Remington SV is good. Reasonably accurate (ten-ring on an NRA 50' reduced target,) cheap, and reliable. CCI Standard is a bit more expensive, but still good.

Mine didn't like Federal 711A at all. Lots of misfeeds, sticky extraction, etc. Very accurate, but I won't use it again.

Almost anything Eley makes is fantastic. You'll pay for it, though. Eley Tenex EPS is the best .22 match ammo made, but you're probably approaching the fundamental limits of the pistol's accuracy at that point. I've had fantastic results with Eley Match Xtra (the orange box,) and it's not too expensive to buy by the brick.

www.championsshooters.com has all the .22 match stuff you could ever want.

I also like the CCI Standard Velocity - about 15 per 500. I tried the Federal Match and it was a little better, at about $25 per 500.

The SOP with .22 is to buy a box of 50 of several different types, then shoot it to see what works best. It is also typical not to clean the bore very often once you've picked a brand you like, so that the lubricant coating is uniform. Good luck.

Many years ago I shot a S&W M41 in bullseye competition and it liked the Western Super Match Mk IV pistol ammo the best out of all that I tried.
It also did very well with the Ely pistol match ammo. I don't recall the exact name but I think the box was green. ???

FWIW the M41 I use likes heavier bullet weights and tends to malfunction on the lighter target loads.
This tendency may be unique to me.
I reasoned that the M41 was made to do more than just target shoot and the spring set up was tuned to a heftier load than the Euro Target guns.
As has already been said, try a variety, and see if the bullet weight thing has any relevance to your gun.

Tip: Buy an 11" Dewey cleaning rod to clean your model 41. The configuration of the barrels leaves a bunch of barrel sticking out at the rear to support the rear sight. In order to clean the 7" barrel from the breech end, for instance, you need a rod at least 10" long. Standard length rods end up getting your knuckles busted with alarming regularity.
