22lr Ammo malfunction

Hi guys, I had some trouble with my 22 today, heres what happened.
I was out for a bit of a hunt with my dads Norinco JW15 22,
I was approaching a spot where I usually see a few rabbits so loaded a round in the chamber and had the gun on half cock, I didn't see anything so I ejected the live round from the chamber. Problem was all i ejected was the case, and the projectile was stuck in the barrel. I got it out at home ok, but I think I could've had a nasty accident if i didn't pay any attention.

My question is why would this have happened and should I keep using the rest of the ammo from the box?
The ammo was CCI sub sonics by the way.

Thanks

Might have been a round with no powder, .22 rounds are mass produced, and things happen. I would use the rest of the ammo, just keep your ears open for a weak report.

You said that you ejected the round, unfired.
Not a round that you tried to fire, but an unfired round.
Yes?
22s in general have pretty loose bullets.
They can often be rotated in the case by hand and even rocked back and forth.
When you say the bullet was still in the barrel, did you mean in the barrel chamber, not the rifling?
If this is so, it must be that one round had a really loose bullet.
If the bullet was in the barrel rifling, then it went off and answer number two is correct - no powder.

the projectile was stuck in the barrel
How far down?

Just to be clear, did you fire the round in question?

After firing, was there a mess of unburned powder in the spent case or in your rifle?

Did you hear a muffled bang?

Sounds like you had a squib: primer detonated but powder did not ignite; and you are right, VERY dangerous if you ignored and another round is fired. I tossed half a box of federal automatch that a squib came out of the only time Ive had one.
Toss the box if you had a squib. If you did not fire and the bullet was pulled lose from the case, the rest of your ammo should be fine to shoot.

I used to have a few .22 rounds that fired, but the bullet never left the casing. Could spin it around inside the casing, and the lip held it in place.

Remington SubSonics, all from the same box

are bullets that turn easily a big deal in .22? I'm holding a brick of winchester HV and the majority turn. I guess I had never given it much thought

If there have been no prior problems with this paticular ammo in this particular rifle, then it could be that the throat is so dirty that the bullet stuck in the throat during ejection. But I really think that would take years of neglect or serious rust in the throat for that to happen, if even possible. The other possibility is that the rifle has a really short throat and/or that particular cartridge was pretty far out of spec (long). This happens to me every now and again, but with handloaded centerfire cartridges with the bullet seated into the lands.

no i did not try firing the round, i didn't see anything to shoot so I ejected the unfired round. it must have been stuck in the chamber but i never really looked.
When I ejected the case there was still a bit of powder in the case, and there was some powder around the action of the gun.
I've never come across it before.
