I'm looking for:

Bolt action 223, heavy barrel 24"+, factory MOA accuracy, Wood stock...

Anybody beside CZ make such a beast.

For a walnut heavy barrel rifle it seems CZ is your only choice when it comes to current factory offerings. Older Remington varmint BDL's can be had in that configuration.

There is always an aftermarket stock as another option as well.

yeah, was just hoping for out of the box...

Ok, since a nice solid wood stock is out and I ain't a big fan of laminates...

Who makes the best synthetic, varmint barrel 223 rifle out of the box, under $700...

I love my remington 700 sps varmint (mine is .308) but the factory stock is trash. I restocked mine as soon as I could afford to.

It will still shoot sub MOA out of the box... but a good stock will make it that much better.

Ruger M77 on Remington 700 both come with Walnut stocks if thats what you want . I've started useing synthetic stocks and bothe come with thoes also .

@wolfe: Let's see. The selection criteria are: walnut or synthetic stock, 24 inch or longer heavy barrel, MOA accuracy, no after markets, and 700$ limit.

There are rifles available which meet the mechanical specifications but exceed the budget. I think your best bet may be a savage, but with that dollar figure, the savage stock will be lower quality and not the accu-stock. Nemesis also had a good suggestion. You may be able to get a remington 700 with a less expensive matte finish and stock. The market also seems to be presently flooded with "tactical" type .223's, but most of them have 20 inch barrels.

Even though you said "no" on the aftermarket stock, you could get an inexpensive savage and drop it in a sporter style, boyd's stock, which is offered in solid walnut (about 114$). You would just have to open up the barrel channel a bit.

I'm not sure remington still makes them, but a really good option was a remington 700, with a 5-R mil-spec barrel. If I recall correctly, they had a 24 inch heavy barrel and a bell & carlson fiberglass stock. But that would likely be over budget.

I own a CZ527 in .223 and really enjoy the rifle. It has a nice single set trigger, good looking wood and bluing and is quite accurate. I picked up the American model rather than the Varmint because it is easier to carry around in the field. CZ makes a fine rifle. I own 4. A 527 in .223, a 550FS in .308, a 452 17HMR Varmint and a VZ58 in 7.62x39. Nary a problem with any of them.

I just picked up a Weatherby Vanguard S2 in 243, it has a 24" barrel, not heavy but not a spindle either, synthetic stock is very sturdy and the rifle has shot sub moa from day 1 picked it up from bud guns for 150.00 under msrp ..Great rifle for the $$$$

To meet all your criteria, I'd comb the used market for one of these...

Savage stopped selling these a few years ago, but it's the model 12 VSS. (Mine's a VSS-S, the single shot variant.) It's .223, 26" stainless fluted barrel, Choate Ultimate Varmint stock. Has an aluminum "V" block to bed the action. Mine consistently shoots 5-shot groups in the .2's at 100 yards with my handloads. A good used one shouldn't be hard to find for under $700
